(The Hill)   Senator Paul bashes "electric car-driving Hollywood liberals" at coal-sponsored rally in Washington, apparently oblivious to the fact that electric cars are the only ones likely to be powered by coal   (thehill.com) divider line 9

Coal companies and coal communities should be screaming for two things that are perceived as primarily "liberal" causes

1) improvements to the national power grid, esp. transporting power long distances and any ability to store or reserve it somehow.
2) electric powered vehicles and/or other forms of transport

They'd be direct beneficiaries of both - since coal is used primarily for electric power generation.

It's possible to be pro-alternatives to oil and also anti-coal power plant emissions control.  They're just too dumb to realize it.

Doc Daneeka: Disposable Rob: Doc Daneeka: Not here in New York.  We only get something like 5% of the electricity in our grid from coal.

The vast majority comes from nuclear, hydroelectric, and natural gas.

And where do non-electric cars usually get their power from?

Exactly.  That's my point.

People say that electric cars aren't really clean because they get energy from coal, but the fact is that coal only supplies a fraction of the energy on the grid (and in many states, only a very small fraction).

The statement "electric cars are the only cars likely to be powered by coal" does not mean "electric cars are likely to be powered by coal".  I think that's the confusion here.

As it should.

And to add, while the Fark headline makes it seem like Paul isn't making the connection between electric cars and coal, I'm pretty sure he's aware of the connection of how coal supports "Hollywood liberals".

This. His comments are specifically about how coal-fired electricity fuels these cars, and that "Hollywood Liberals" are deluding themselves if they think that electric cars are an opt-out of the fossil fuel industry.

They aren't that deluded. If they are in Hollywood, coal is a tiny fraction of their electricity generation source. Around 4%, in fact. http://energyalmanac.ca.gov/electricity/electricity_generation.html

It is, however, more than the zero that gas-fueled cars use.

There is no such thing as clean coal.

Maybe this will help.

37% of electricity in the United States is produced by coal

and/so electric cars are currently the only cars that use energy produced by coal

until I convert mine to Bio-Kingsford. (Yes, I am aware charcoal and coal aren't the same thing.)

Here's a guy who doesn't understand the word "likely"

Also, is it me or does the GOP derp keep getting crazier?

I work for a polling agency that contracts with a lot of far-right clients - Heritage, American Crossroads, etc.

Push polls.

And no, it's definitely not just you.

I hear from a lot of people, all day.

The Republican party is consuming itself. It wasn't three weeks ago, that these same, derpy-ass people we called were all about Cruz, and the shutdown, and farkin' 'no compromise, stick to your guns' all day.

Now, a lot of people are calling Cruz an idiot, and saying we need to compromise.

However, there's still a fairly large chunk of die-hard bunker dwellers, gumming things up. "We can't just lay down, and let Fartbongo have his way."

It's really awesome to watch, to be totally honest. I've been waiting for these guys to turn on each other for a while.
