I figured Francis would just sell it, but helping the needy works too.

Where is the place, will the people that need it be able to get there?

Alexander VI is spinning in his grave.

I love this Pope

It's in Limburg,Hesse,Germany. Population is 33,619. Nearest large city is Frankfurt, about 63 km away.

If they sold it, even if they turned around and put 40m euros into a food bank program, it would probably garner less press (or possibly criticism, it isn't like any church is very open about its finances) than doing this.

As long as the clergy are getting the point, that they need to actually live as Christ intended instead of abusing their power as they've been accustomed, then I don't care if they raze the house.

I'm a "recovering Catholic" but Pope Francis is surely doing great work.

Well, it's definitely the fanciest soup kitchen in town. I'm pretty sure we going to see more bishops turning their mansions into something useful for the least of us.

Is there a different article with more information? Because there's nothing at all referencing the Pope having anything to do with this in the linked one.

It's not much a leap to see the Pope's words and deeds are setting the example for the rest of the clergy.

Francis didn't do squat here. It was the diocese of Limburg.

Francis suspended the Bishop in charge.

It's almost as if they are Christian....strange.

Well the Catholics figured out they needed a public relations Pope.....

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN;

IN THIS CORNER,

WEIGHING IN AT 180 POUNDS,

STANDING 5' 9" WITH HIS MITRE,

THE POPE WHO SAID NOPE,

YOU BETTER NOT CALL HIM A SISSY,

FRANCIS!!!!!

2013-10-30 04:25:37 AM
Ohhhhhh snap. That is GLORIOUS. Praise be the glory.

2013-10-30 04:26:14 AM
Jeez.

Lighten up, Francis.

2013-10-30 04:30:11 AM
To me, they'll always be the organization that tried to cover up sex abuse by their priests.

heh

Well, uh, it sure doesn't sound like the pope had anything to do with this story. Still, I was raised Catholic and will never go back (have considered myself an "apatheist" for many years, and that's not likely to change), but I really like the cut of this pope's jib in general. Seems to talk the walk more than most.

2013-10-30 04:39:06 AM
How about a place where sex abuse victims can get some support?

Oh, right. Catholics.

2013-10-30 04:48:06 AM
this is a really good sign. REALLY good!

2013-10-30 04:51:41 AM
Oh, this Pope's gonna have an "accident" sometime, I'm sure.

He keeps his own opulent palace, located in its' own sovereign city-state, right?

Prediction:

Pope gets shot.

Owangotang: He keeps his own opulent palace, located in its' own sovereign city-state, right?

He does at that.  However he lives in the guest suite at the hotel that houses visiting clergy to the Vatican, because he thought that the Papal Apartments were too lavish for him.  God knows there have been abuses at the hands of the Catholic Church, and not just physical ones, but this seems to be a certain change in the prevailing winds, and it IS refreshing to see.

2013-10-30 05:00:54 AM
Wait until he finds out who had Thomas Merton whacked.

2013-10-30 05:38:36 AM
The Limburgers think this stinks.

2013-10-30 05:47:37 AM
This Pope better have a trusted 'food-taster'.

They're cheesed off?

God damn meddlesome pope.  I'm too old to be changing my preconceptions about the Catholic church.

/tosses belt-onion on Vatican lawn
//seriously, good for him

Great. There goes the neighborhood. :-/

2013-10-30 05:58:47 AM
While this seems a welcome step, the church still owns the mansion.

/less to this than meets the eye

2013-10-30 06:13:56 AM
this pope seems to know how to do good PR

/guy's got a lot if work ahead of him
//still doesn't help the zealots are dumber and louder and more numerous

2013-10-30 06:14:28 AM

Sgygus: the church still owns the mansion.

And now it can use it for something more suitable to its mission than housing a cardinal.

He's working on them bit by bit. He's smart enough to know you don't so much as throw them off a cliff as guide them to the edge and watch as they happily walk right over.

Is that Cap'n Spaulding?

Nope. This guy is great at PR. He's outraged at all the right things, and is all forgivey with all the things that don't matter.

Is he firing pedophiles or those who shelter them? Nope. Is he calling in civil authority to investigate crimes in the church? Nope.

He's the perfect screen. Deflecting criticism of the church while allowing the true evil to fester.

2013-10-30 06:29:34 AM
There aren't many people more hateful toward organized religion than I am and i farkin' love this guy. I'll never convert but i'll damn sure give credit where credit is due. Franky's a stand up guy.

2013-10-30 06:37:34 AM
I'm another "former CAtholic but like the new guy" person. He seems pretty committed to showing what Christianity is rather than just saying it.

/not superstitious, but still think about Malachy
//it would be a *sneaky* way to usher in the antichrist

He'll get there, if he really wants to deal with the issue then he needs to untangle the web of crap that's been around for ages first. Also keep in mind he's done away with the Curia, the people who basically run the church, as it has existed for ages and he's gonna replace it. No one is sure quite what will replace it, but the hang out for the old guard has been torn down and hauled off.

It takes a little time, sometimes, to get the Titanic turned back around. Give it time.

I specifically remember on the fark thread where the Bishop of Bling was suspended more than one person said "Yeah well if he REALLY meant what he'd said, he'd sell the place and give the money to the poor'.

Is this a descent enough compromise?

And America the home of the land hungry imperialists who spread disease and slaughter.

Forever.

There is no other side to America.

He actually prepares his own food. Says he's 'used to doing it that way'

maddogdelta: Is he firing pedophiles or those who shelter them? Nope. Is he calling in civil authority to investigate crimes in the church? Nope.

Oh hey, you know how I know you have no clue international law would have to work on a large scale to crack down on that IMMEDIATELY as he got elected into office?

Oh hey, you don't know international law, logistics of handling an investigation that size, and more importantly, starting one up without the intended perps catching wind?

Oh then you're just talking a farkton of shiat without any real idea of how to deal with a problem.

You see in the adult world, problems require 'logistics' not just 'throw the bad men in jail'.

So, one way or the other, neither you nor I know if Francis is or is not doing anything about the problem.

What does remain true is assuming twatwaffles like yourself remain just as bad as the fundamentalists with your backward thinking.

Stop that.
