I joined the Army two days after the 9/11 attacks. I joined the Army because our country had been attacked. I wanted to strike back at those who had killed some 3,000 of my fellow citizens. I did not join the Army to go to Iraq, a country that had no part in the September 2001 attacks and did not pose a threat to its neighbors, much less to the United States. I did not join the Army to "liberate" Iraqis or to shut down mythical weapons-of-mass-destruction facilities or to implant what you cynically called "democracy" in Baghdad and the Middle East. I did not join the Army to rebuild Iraq, which at the time you told us could be paid for by Iraq's oil revenues. Instead, this war has cost the United States over $3 trillion. I especially did not join the Army to carry out pre-emptive war. Pre-emptive war is illegal under international law. And as a soldier in Iraq I was, I now know, abetting your idiocy and your crimes. The Iraq War is the largest strategic blunder in U.S. history. It obliterated the balance of power in the Middle East. It installed a corrupt and brutal pro-Iranian government in Baghdad, one cemented in power through the use of torture, death squads and terror. And it has left Iran as the dominant force in the region. On every level-moral, strategic, military and economic-Iraq was a failure. And it was you, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney, who started this war. It is you who should pay the consequences.

Even if you take Cheney's statement is the most positive light possible - that Saddam could have created a bomb, and he could have become friendly with al Qaeda, and he could have decided to part with the WMD's he had spent decades building by giving them to someone over whom he had no control, and who could have very well used them against Saddam himself - even if you assume that all of that is true, you still have to recognize one simple, incontrovertible fact:

We create thousands upon thousands of more terrorists and extremists by invading Iraq than we ever killed there.  The US invading Iraq was the greatest recruiting commercial for terrorists in the world since the Russians invaded Afghanistan.

Don't forget that we were "allegedly" in a surplus and set to pay off that debt in 10 years.  Given that we are now $16T in the hole (and granted not ALL of it was spent on war), the awesometacular Bush years only cost us about $20T in debt.

Best Korea has chemical AND nuclear weapons. Definite possession of WMDs. We KNOW they've got them. Hell, they even brag that they've got them. No U.N. inspectors necessary. Why don't we invade NK and get rid of those WMDs?

Same reason we know that Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, et al knew for a fact prior to the invasion that Iraq did not have WMDs: invading a nation that really does have WMDs would be insane.

This is a guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis):

www.malevolentdesign.org

D. medinensis is a parasite which has been reported in humans, dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and other animals in Africa and Asia. It enters a host by way of host ingestion of stagnant water contaminated with copepods (water fleas) infested with guinea worm larvae. The adult worm grows within the host and eventually moves downwards, usually to the lower leg, through the subcutaneous tissues it leads to intense pain localized to its path of travel. The painful, burning sensation experienced by infected people has led to the disease being called "the fiery serpent". Other symptoms include fever, nausea, and vomiting. Once a Guinea worm begins emerging, the first step is to do a controlled submersion of the affected area in a bucket of water. This causes the worm to discharge many of its larva, making it less infectious. The water is then discarded on the ground far away from any water source. Submersion results in subjective relief of the burning sensation and makes subsequent extraction of the worm easier. To extract the worm, a person must wrap the live worm around a piece of gauze or a stick. The process can be long, taking anywhere from hours to months. It is of great importance not to break the worm when pulling it out. Broken worms have a tendency to putrefy or petrify. Putrefaction leads to the skin sloughing off around the worm. Petrification is a problem if the worm is in a joint or wrapped around a vein or other important area.

Dick Cheney is the only person who ever lived who actually deserves guinea worms. Sadly, they are repulsed by him and will have nothing to do with him.

A local populace that wants us gone, which will create a theocratic shiate vacuum instead on f the secular Sunni regime Saddam had in place.

We got nothing out of the second Iraq war but killing people, including the Iraqi civilians we were ostensibly liberating.  Leaving Saddam was the best thing we could've done to Iraq.  The fight against al Qaeda was in Afghanistan. Unwinnable Afghanistan.

* If we had to do it over again  we would do exactly the same thing.
* His regime has had high-level contacts with al Qaeda going back a decade and has provided training to al Qaeda terrorists.
* I had other priorities in the 60's than military service   - Dick Cheney
* We now know that Saddam [Hussein] has resumed his efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.

Talk about "learning the lessons of 9/11" -- the biggest lesson should have been that non-state actors are a threat.  We've successfully deterred established state actors like Iraq for decades, but we didn't realize that organizations like al-Qaeda can be a threat and cannot be deterred because of their fluid nature.

Instead, I hear Richard Perle get interviewed on the anniversary of 9/11 on NPR and tell the interviewer that the biggest lesson of 9/11 was the threat from WMDs.  Even though AQ successfully attacked multiple American targets without using any WMDs.  And so we attack Iraq, even though they're no threat to us because we've kicked their asses so many times already.

And you should be - the last 60 years of U.S. foreign policy have been pure bullshiat.
Blaming Bush or Obama or any of the Presidents who have chosen the cowardly path of regurgitating that stale policy is fair enough - but not especially helpful.
We need a real revolution in foreign policy, and I don't see anybody on the horizon in either party who is likely to change it right now. We need to get more and worse bloody noses until we learn, I guess - it seems a shame.

But at one point, Bush showed a photo of himself looking for something out a window in the Oval Office, and he said, "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere." The audience laughed. I grimaced. But that wasn't the end of it. After a few more slides, there was a shot of Bush looking under furniture in the Oval Office. "Nope," he said. "No weapons over there." More laughter. Then another picture of Bush searching in his office: "Maybe under here." Laughter again.

We create thousands upon thousands of more terrorists and extremists by invading Iraq than we ever killed there.  The US invading Iraq was the greatest recruiting commercial for terrorists in the world since the Russians invaded Afghanistan.

The Soviet Union didn't invade Afghanistan.

There government of Afghanistan asked for the help of the Soviet Union.

Yeah, that government was "teh ebil" in the context of the cold war. But at least communists have this thing with universal free education, healthcare and building lots of infrastructure. And they don't differentiate between boys or girls.

Whatever came after the Soviet Union leaving has just been pure shiat for Afghanistan.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: I was a freshman in high school when the invasion of Iraq happened. To date, three people I know are dead because of it - 2 killed in action, 1 killed by suicide.

Cheney should be damned grateful he has lifetime secret service protection because someone (not me, I don't condone violence against public officials) will be constantly planning to take a shot at him.

A couple years ago, I took a road trip to see the memorial my old unit put up, from my last tour in Iraq.

I'm not as angry about the war as I was, but Jesus Christ, it's like he's trying to be a smug asshole about it.

GodsTumor: Al Qaeda was never in Iraq until we invaded!

To be fair, there were a handful of Al Qaeda affiliated groups in Iraq before the invasion - hiding up in the mountains, because if they'd shown their face in public Saddam Hussein would've killed them.

cchris_39: The reading comprehension around here is somewhere between Creationist Peter and Feral Peter.

Please enlighten us, o wise one: which part of this quote are we misinterpreting?

"What we gain and my concern was then and it remains today is that the biggest threat we face is the possibility of terrorist groups like al Qaeda equipped with weapons of mass destruction, with nukes, bugs or gas. That was the threat after 9/11 and when we took down Saddam Hussein we eliminated Iraq as a potential source of that."

gilgigamesh: Chariset: gaslight: The man's shameless.

And heartless.

Not anymore. All he needed was the heart of an innocent young boy to restore his vigor.

I suppose that means his lifetime of heart troubles are behind him at last, and we can look forward to many more years of this Dick.

hurray

If there is any justice in the world The Fates sent that heart his way to enable him to have the strength for a long, painful and ultimately unsuccessful battle with a particularly aggressive form of ass cancer.
