Will there be a national holiday when Dick Cheney dies? A day of remembrance and celebration?

International, I think.  I just hope he doesn't die a free man.

PsiChick: nocturnal001: Man, I used to think I disliked Cheney but after reading this thread I feel like I am forcibly defaulted to be his fan club president.

Is it a war crime to be amazingly wrong about how you can change the world via force?

Now, torturing people to gain intell...that is getting there.

Except he wasn't going in for ideological, spreading-democracy reasons--he and Bush were going in to prevent a 'smoking gun in the form of a mushroom cloud'.

In other words? They lied.

I'm still not convinced that W was in on the lie.

Dick Cheney is the only person who ever lived who actually deserves guinea worms. Sadly, they are repulsed by him and will have nothing to do with him.

you mean the fella looking under furniture in his office for wmd's

In that presentation http://www.thenation.com/blogs/capitalgames?pid=1336">David Corn of The Nation reported:
Bush notes he spends "a lot of time on the phone listening to our European allies." Then we see a photo of him on the phone with a finger in his ear. But at one point, Bush showed a photo of himself looking for something out a window in the Oval Office, and he said, "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere." The audience laughed. I grimaced. But that wasn't the end of it. After a few more slides, there was a shot of Bush looking under furniture in the Oval Office. "Nope," he said. "No weapons over there." More laughter. Then another picture of Bush searching in his office: "Maybe under here." Laughter again.

so either evil in deed or evil in heart - send im off with cheny

Yes! Israel used the powerful Jew Magic(tm) to make all those thousands march the streets against the Islamic Brotherhood once they made it quite clear how they want to run the country.
It wasn't pissed off Egyptians at Morsi for failing live up to the revolution, it was Israel! and nothing spells out 'democracy and freedom' like a fundamentalist islamic theocracy.

Kibbler: I hope we remember this next time we're told, invade or we all die, and besides--trust me, I'm an oil man--we will loot all of their oil and everybody gets free gas.

But we won't.

Still angrier at my shiat-for-brains fellow citizens than Cheney.

And you should be - the last 60 years of U.S. foreign policy have been pure bullshiat.
Blaming Bush or Obama or any of the Presidents who have chosen the cowardly path of regurgitating that stale policy is fair enough - but not especially helpful.
We need a real revolution in foreign policy, and I don't see anybody on the horizon in either party who is likely to change it right now. We need to get more and worse bloody noses until we learn, I guess - it seems a shame.
If it took a black man in the White House for Cletus of the Trailer Park to figure out that unappreciated imperialism as foreign policy sucks - then so be it.

Mambo Bananapatch: Flappyhead: And this guy hasn't been black bagged, thrown into a van, driven to an airport and flown to the Hague because?

Because neither Iraq nor the USA is a state party to the ICC. AFAIK either the alleged offender must be a citizen of a ratified state party, or the crime must have taken place in a ratified state party.

Anyway, he should be rolled up into a carpet and dumped into the East River.

IANAInternationalCriminalL, but I think also relevant is that it would be fairly difficult to establish jurisdiction even if the USA was a state-party, because it's not clear he directed specific war crimes during the war (jus in bello), and while the ICC theoretically has jurisdiction over the crime of aggression (jus ad bellum - legality of going to war in the first place), that's contingent on them working out a definition of aggression which they haven't done yet (I think there was a conference a year ago to work on this, but don't know the outcome).

Maybe on a torture charge?

Yeah if only we could have had someone in there checking to see if their was WMDs without a full on war. Oh wait we did. We made it so he had to leave early and the Bush admin attacked him and discredited him.

Ding Ding Ding Ding! This is the correct and only answer.  We could have reached the conclusion that Iraq did not have any WMDs or WMD programs if we allowed the inspections to continue for as long as the inspectors in Iraq wished to continue.  And it would not have cost us $2T and half a million lives.  What a choad.

The Saddam regime, the Russians and the Democrats all coordinated to move Saddam's massive WMD arsenal out of Iraq and into Syria with Russian truck convoys in the days before the invasion. Everyone was happy about that at the time, especially Bush, since it would make things safer for the troops.

Sgt Otter: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: I was a freshman in high school when the invasion of Iraq happened. To date, three people I know are dead because of it - 2 killed in action, 1 killed by suicide.

Cheney should be damned grateful he has lifetime secret service protection because someone (not me, I don't condone violence against public officials) will be constantly planning to take a shot at him.

A couple years ago, I took a road trip to see the memorial my old unit put up, from my last tour in Iraq.

Yep, no possible way they could have manufactured their own.

Also, you've got to be a special kind of idiot to say "Saddam moved all his weapons to Syria" in an attempt to justify the invasion of Iraq.

syrynxx: What was the US debt before invading a sovereign nation that didn't threaten the US? Five trillion or so?

Don't forget that we were "allegedly" in a surplus and set to pay off that debt in 10 years.  Given that we are now $16T in the hole (and granted not ALL of it was spent on war), the awesometacular Bush years only cost us about $20T in debt.

fusillade762: exick: What we gain and my concern was then and it remains today is that the biggest threat we face is the possibility of terrorist groups like al Qaeda equipped with weapons of mass destruction, with nukes, bugs or gas. That was the threat after 9/11 and when we took down Saddam Hussein we eliminated Iraq as a potential source of that.

If your biggest concern was eliminating potential sources of weapons for terrorists, why is it that you shot some old Texas lawyer instead of Rumsfeld or yourself?

Saddam wasn't exactly cozy with al Qaeda. There was no way they were getting ahold of his non-existent WMDs. Cheney's either being disingenuous or he's been drinking way too much of his own Kool-Aid.

Talk about "learning the lessons of 9/11" -- the biggest lesson should have been that non-state actors are a threat.  We've successfully deterred established state actors like Iraq for decades, but we didn't realize that organizations like al-Qaeda can be a threat and cannot be deterred because of their fluid nature.

Instead, I hear Richard Perle get interviewed on the anniversary of 9/11 on NPR and tell the interviewer that the biggest lesson of 9/11 was the threat from WMDs.  Even though AQ successfully attacked multiple American targets without using any WMDs.  And so we attack Iraq, even though they're no threat to us because we've kicked their asses so many times already.

I want to buy the house across from Dick Cheney, paint it white, then project this image on the front of my house 24/7 . Under it I will rotate quotes from Dick Cheney.

* We will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.
* I think they're in  the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency.
* If we had to do it over again  we would do exactly the same thing.
* His regime has had high-level contacts with al Qaeda going back a decade and has provided training to al Qaeda terrorists.
* I had other priorities in the 60's than military service   - Dick Cheney
* We now know that Saddam [Hussein] has resumed his efforts to acquire nuclear weapons.

Nah.... if karma, reincarnation, and some sort of intelligence after death are real then he'll come back and see it from the THEIR perspective.  Then once that life is over he'll remember both and be forced to remember he caused all that suffering for eternity.  THAT's punishment, to not simply KNOW what you did but to understand it.
