100% this!

After all, we are the state that passed the anti-sharia law bill that even the proponents admitted was unconstitutional. And it was thrown out.

On Monday, a federal judge ruled Texas' new abortion restrictions unconstitutional on the grounds that the regulations violated physicians' right to do what they think is best for patients and unreasonably restricted women's access to abortion clinics.

Novel idea.

If Rick Santorum's wife had been in a state that banned all drug induced abortions, she'd be dead right now.

Ok, she'd have been flown to a different state and had her life saved that way, but still.

I don't care what you call her choice.  Call it abortion, call it miscarriage, call it whatever.  She had to make a tough and horrible decision that no expecting mother should have to make, but life is not fair or easy.  She ended a complicated pregnancy by choosing to take a drug that caused her pregnancy to end.

She and her husband are advocates for taking away that choice from other women.

The state legislature only puts these sort of evocative measures on the ballot to ensure that the hyper-militant "conservative Christian" types turn out to vote.  While they're there in the voting booth, the Fundies also put a check mark next to the names of the Republican candidates running for office.

Convenient, ain't it?

Well, the abortion bit wasn't a ballot initiative. But yeah, it seems at least 50% of the ballot initiatives are exactly the sort that you mention.

Our entire congressional delegation and all state offices are held by Republican. Republicans have a 2/3 majority in the state house and state senate. I think it's safe to say we are the reddest state in the nation.

I found this from 2000:

"Asked whether they think of themselves as Republicans, Democrats or something else, 43 percent said Republican and 41 percent said Democrat; the other 16 percent declined to identify with either party. "

And as of 2010:

Party                9/15/2010
=======          =======

Democrat          998,139             (48.4%)

Republican        831,706             (40.3%)

Independent      233,768             (11.3%)

TOTAL              2,063,613

Which is why I said reddest state, not the most Republican state. If you look at those numbers and look at the way we, as a state, vote you will find that many people who are registered Democrat vote Republican. Against McCain Obama did not win a single of Oklahoma's 77 counties.

This seems to be the new strategy - pass something and wait for someone to challenge it in courts. If it's upheld, great. If it's overturned, well that took months, and they can just pass something else.

There's been a movement for 40-50 years for the U.P. to secede from Michigan to become its own state. Nothing I've ever heard about seceding from the union, though.
