The thump sound that the canister makes when it sticks to the vehicle is surprisingly gratifying.

Yes, it's called taxes.  People in free countries like Somalia don't have to put up with that sort of tyranny.

This totally works until it catches on that cops are using it.

1) Slather oil on back of car.
2) Steal car.

Or just slow down, drive into Omaha or whatever, then rip the canister off or cut the power to the active tracker, whatever.

Your tax dollars at work, people.

No, I was speaking about seizures.  Which is what the Founding Fathers would be having if they saw our War on Drugs.

Hmmm not sure if this will never take off because it cuts down on "the thrill of the chase", or if it will take off because once you've tracked the vehicle to a location you can go in in full SWAT mode.

This is a toughy.

Steal car.
Haul ass.
Turn radio down and listen for loud 'thump'.
Wait for cop to 'tag' you.
Wait for cop to back off.
Pull over safely in discreet area and remove 'tag'.

Profit!

/facepalm

I don't think your most ardent libertarian has a problem with local or state taxes...there's a measure of control over that.  It's the power of the federal government which is the sore spot...so please, stop with the inane Somalia references.

So how well will this actually work in the heat of the chase? Seems more "movie special effects" and less "practical innovation" than shown in those very obvious non-chase demonstrations.

I think such a system is a great idea, but this news report left something out; I saw a different report that says the rounds have a low stick rate in testing.  That is, more trackers bounce off than actually stick.  I'm sure this will improve, but basemetal is right, too; this will probably lead to a sort of arms race where GPS and/or cellular jammers become standard equipment for car thieves and other miscreants.

Still, potentially saving lives and thousands of dollars of damages, while still catching the suspect, is a laudable goal.

Oh, it won't save any lives or damages. Because the rounds have a low stick rate (and because the cops wouldn't trust them anyway, because what if the suspect simply pulls over and removes the device when they're out of sight), no cops are going to slow down or break off pursuit after tagging the car. This will be used merely as a backup in case the suspect does get away, but with the expectation that they will never actually be needed... so, you'll still have high speed chases, still have collisions with other cars, and now you'll have also spent an additional $500 per round on this toy.

Therefore, all taxes ever no matter the rate are always OK.

$500 per round vs N*$1,000s in vehicle damage + possible personal injury to officers and downtime in the range of N*$10,000s?

Yeah, high speed pursuits make more financial sense ... :/

I have yet to see cops not almost immediately abuse every new toy that they get, so I will reserve my enthusiasm for now about any claim that this will be a positive thing for people.

I don't know how they will abuse it, I've just been around long enough to know that they will.

The problem with making flat, absolute statements is a single counterfactual undermines your entire claim. You know, like the evidence in the video that they backed off and tracked the guy to Omaha without chasing him hot the whole time. You're normally much better than this.

I'm just wondering what's going to happen after they tag the governor's SUV while it's speeding again.

The officer in the video says he used it for real the night before.

I'm wondering about that $500 per use. Those tracking device looks like they should be recyclable (put new sticking surface, test the electronic).
But as other have said I do believe that professional car thief will remove it once they aren't chased anymore but their are plenty of stupid people out here that probably won't.

I don't think they're called "bullets" at 45mm anymore. That's like almost 2 inches.

Ingenious, and useful too. Allow a man to stop off for a quick one en route.

2013-10-29 12:45:47 PM
"A lid pops open in the grill and the tracking bullet shoots out, sticking to the bad guy's trunk."

"After deploying the device, troopers were able to turn off their lights and end the chase."

"After they think the officer has disengaged, they [the criminal] back down to normal speeds to blend in with traffic so they don't get noticed again,"

So basically, it fires a tracking device into your car...at high speed...in traffic.

Then police "back off" to let the suspect think he got away.

Sounds foolproof for anyone who can't, A) take something off the back of their car, or B) Get in another car
