We have a fantastic solution to that here in western PA.  We fill old coal mines up with fly ash, thus solving the problem once and for all.

We built large lakes as settling ponds all along the Sierra foot hills because of the hydraulicking. Then the hydraulicking never resumed.

They should stop a lot of the mercury from reaching down stream to where a lot of it was mined.

Yep, cuz filling them with trash and setting them on fire turned out to be a bad idea.
