Might be a response to this: Yemeni warplanes struck Al Qaeda hideouts Thursday killing six terrorists even as suspected Al Qaeda militants killed an intelligence officer in the country's capital Sanaa

It's been going on a while now. I'm surprised it took them this long to go after the Embassy.

The US still has an embassy in Yemen?

2013-10-28 05:15:22 PM
No word yet on if it's an actual attack on the US Embassy, just that it was a big explosion in that area and subsequent gunfire.

I'm surprised too. The U.S. and Yemen have been pounding at them quite a while. Of course, maybe there have been incidents before this---its not like the American media give a crap about Yemen stories in general.

Did any of you read the article?  My guess is no.

The U.S. and Britain evacuated diplomatic staff from Sanaa in August after learning of a threatened attack that prompted Washington to close temporarily 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and Africa.

They were evacuated for about two weeks and returned Labor Day-ish.

Actually, I think the embassy is not staffed for the time being, ever since that whole mess with evacuating various embassies in August. If we do have anyone there, it is facilities maintenance staff, a few clerks, and some Marines to keep the idle curious out (and as for the CIA? They sure as shiat ain't operating from the big target known as the United Sates Embassy to Yemen).

We don't.  They were evacuated in August.

whistleridge: Which leads me to my next question: WHY THE FARK DO WE STILL HAVE AN EMBASSY IN YEMEN???

Because the Yemeni government is a key strategic ally against Al Qaeda.

R.A.Danny: Crazy. We're gonna be dealing with shiat like this forever.

We have been dealing with sh*t like this forever.

Langston: No word yet on if it's an actual attack on the US Embassy, just that it was a big explosion in that area and subsequent gunfire.

Yeah, it's not as if there are 19 dead and 16 wounded like in 2008 when [REDACTED] was president.

whistleridge: Which leads me to my next question: WHY THE FARK DO WE STILL HAVE AN EMBASSY IN YEMEN???

It would be hard to convince the local government that the U.S. stands by them and supports them in their attacks against al-Qaeda if the U.S. closed its embassy and withdrew. Its not like a military base or an occupation. Its an embassy. Embassies are necessary to have, especially on the Arabian peninsula ON THE TIP OF THE PERSIAN GULF.

whistleridge: Which leads me to my next question: WHY THE FARK DO WE STILL HAVE AN EMBASSY IN YEMEN???

It's my understanding that the facility, like many others in the region, is currently closed and unmanned due to credible threats. I do believe that maintaining an embassy wherever possible is a good thing for the United States. Remember that we're not at war with Yemen, and having a diplomatic presence there can be nice when we need to talk to their government on an official level.

I'm not sure that means the US Embassy remains shuttered there, just that at one point the Embassy was evacuated. That doesn't mean that it's still empty today.
