Agree with Wings at 20. They need a shake up of some kind. Sloppy play against the Rangers on Saturday.

First hockey thread in a while?

What do people think of the Vanek-Mouslon trade?

Biggest trade in the month of October for quite some time.

I'm cautiously optimistic.  It looks like Darcy got good value for Vanek, and Moulson's a pretty good player in his own right.  Now we just need some defense.

I read today that in the four drafts from 2012-2015, the Sabres will have 17 first- and second-round picks (7 firsts + 10 seconds).

17!

And that's only as it stands now.  They'll likely add more high round picks when Miller is inevitably dealt, and Moulson, Ehrhoff, and Stafford may all potentially be dealt at the deadline.

They're not going to add veteran defense (beyond the acquisition of Tallinder this past summer).

They have a solid pipeline of young D coming in.  Myers is still only 23, then you have Ristolainen, Zadorov, Pysyk, McNabb, and McCabe.  That is the new core of the defense moving forward, plus other young players like McBain, Ruhwedel, Sulzer who can fill lower pairing roles.

This is how Buffalo's tear-down-and-rebuild is different from Edmonton's.  Buffalo remembered to draft defensemen too.

As for the rankings, did Ottawa really jump two spots on account of Zibanejad getting a couple of points?  'Cause I can't think of any other reason.

It's a good point, but it depresses me to know that the season is already over.  Ah well, hope for next year?

Holding at number 2! Go AVS!!!! The amount of stupid penalties they take is worrying though. But 10-1 is hard to argue with...

Could be that they don't have to play the Sharks or Ducks again this year. That's got to be a plus for their record.

Pittsburgh Penguins: Outscored 9-4 in three straight losses, despite outshooting opponents by an average of 15 shots per game.

As a Pens fan, this makes me want to go insane.

How on Earth can a team outshoot their opponents this much and still lose?!?!

Sooner or later that damn puck better find the back of the net.

That game in Toronto was truly frustrating, I'm sure.

Crosby was well-contained and Malkin was just wrong. His passes were just awful.

They sure did make Nashville their biatch after that overtime loss to Vancouver.  But they're not a #3. More like a 6, 7 or 8.

Hell, they're 9th in the Western Conference standings right now.

TSN is just mad that Anaheim is (or was) stacked to gills with offensive talent. Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Silfverburg, the Finnish Flash.

Also, the new Danish goalie is pretty damn good for a rookie.

So Patrick Kaleta won't appeal to an independent arbitrator so his 10 game ban is official now. Phoenix's Martin Hanzal has just been suspended 2 games for charging w/ head contact.

And a reminder for those unaware that I am doing an alternate points standings again this year with a couple added wrinkles. It is being updated nightly, except when I'm pissed off that my team chose to piss all over themselves in the 1st period, make a comeback and then after tying the game, piss all over themselves again.

At least it's in Google Docs so I can update it from work.

Some facts:

4 teams have had every game decided in regulation: Colorado, Philadelphia, Montreal and Boston

Colorado has the most regulation wins at 10. San Jose is 2nd at 9 wins. No other team has more than 7.

12 games total have been decided in overtime. Vancouver has the most OT wins at 4. No team has lost more than once in the overtime period.

24 games have gone to a shootout. LA has the most SO wins at 4. New Jersey has the most SO losses at 3 and the most OT/SO games played without a win (4).

LA also has the most OT/SO games played without a loss (5).

Vancouver has the most OT/SO games played overall with 6 (4-0 in OT, 1-1 in SO).

I'm not going to pretend to know a smidge about hockey really... but,.....

1.  Other than the Canadiens at 6-5, nobody ahead of them has more than 4 losses, so, just from an look at the standings, it isn't "outrageous"... if they are actually the worst team with 3-4 losses.

2.  They are 3rd in the league in standings points right now..... Opposing league rank in standings: 10, 18, 28, 22, 17, 7, 24, 22, 21   ..... for losses: 2, 6, 16.   Two wins against "Top 10" teams, but, 2-3 overall against the top 16.  I didn't check everyone else, but, maybe most of them have better wins... don't know.  Also, they seems to be doing a "what have you done for me lately" view of it, since 2 of the 3 losses were in the last week.

/just looking at it from a numbers perspective.

As an Isles fan, I like the trade. The idea of Tavares having a skill winger instead of guy who makes his living on dirty work is amazing. I love Moulson, but Vanek's a big upgrade, bigger than than the goal stats would indicate.

Obviously there's a risk that Vanek doesn't sign, but after years of rebuilding I like that the Isles are making a move like this. As for the draft pick, if the Isles end up where they should be it's a mid rounder at best. Still a steep price, but I'm ok with the risk. Our system's pretty stocked as it is.

Ask the Devils, they did that all the time last year and still lost. :( It's either puck luck or just not doing quality shots and not screening the goalie.
