So of course we need to pass a law mandating backup cameras, and when technology permits, auto-braking on all cars.

Sounds like the ol' hunting accident defense.

Good thing they mentioned the damaged garage door in the same sentence.

I'm lucky I never hurt anyone when I was in my 20s. Times are different now though. The cops used to drop my drunken father off at home back when I was growing up.

No excuses. Sorry about your pending vehicular manslaughter conviction. It's actually doing her a solid, because one could argue anyone who drives drunk is committing a premeditated crime.

"Police believe the driver and pedestrian knew each other, and at one point in the evening both women were in the same sport-utility vehicle. There were beer cans near the scene of the crash."

Her mistake was standing anywhere near a car with a woman driving it. Especially a sports utility vehicle. Instead of doing like a proper driver by turning your body to look out the back window while backing up, I bet she was using the rear view mirror instead.

I don't think you go far enough. There is no argument against it. Everyone knows your judgement is impaired when you drink. Everyone has been told time and time again not to drive if you've had anything to drink.

If you get behind the wheel of a car with alcohol in your system anything you do is, effectively, premeditated.

I think cars that drive themselves is the ultimate solution.  Then people can just "blame the computer error" like they do with everything else in their lives.

I'll bet she was so drunk, it didn't matter.  But I beg to differ that turning around is the best way to see everything.  Your mirrors show you much more area.
However, when in doubt, you should use BOTH.

I'll wait for the police report because I have no idea what that article is saying.

I've always felt I didn't see enough in the mirrors when backing up, and in addition I'm looking at the mirror with the distraction of whatever I can see through the windshield. For me anyways I feel better just focusing on looking out the back. But I agree with you, do both when in doubt.

Well, did the lights work? I'm on tenterhooks here.

That's already in the works.  Thee's some lady that ran over her kid backing up (while sober) who is fighting like hell for it.

I think that's a bit much, and in this case at least the woman was obviously too wasted to get behind the wheel in the first place.

Backup cameras are already mandated, the feds just haven't defined yet what is required. I think a minimum of 640 x 480 resolution with deployable body bag.

Aw crap!  I just dented the garage door.  Damn, could this night get any worse?  Brenda? Brenda?

She probably thought "R" meant radio.

Thou art mistaken. Whence comest thou, thinking I am a wench?

It is San Jose's 34th traffic fatality of the year, and the 21st involving a pedestrian.

Whole lotta pedestrians getting run over out there.

Yeah, that's what I was making fun of.  I've driven full-sized vans, GMC Suburbans, minivans, etc, my whole life and managed to never crush anything.  If you cannot handle a vehicle, then don't drive it.  Or get the cameras installed voluntarily.

Just wait for the annual "Where are all the affordable used cars?" articles.

Some vehicles are blocked when you try to turn around. many SUV's are full of enough of the kids junk that the view is partly blocked. Learning to use the mirrors should be a required driving skill. But honestly, I still prefer to look back when I can, but have to mirror drive often enough to make it look deceptively easy.

The roads here are crowded, underlit and poorly maintained.  But at least housing prices are astronomical!

Auto braking will never be mandatory.  The second someone hits another with it equipped, the lawsuits will fly.  Enhance your calm.

I think my dad's truck has more radar than a WW2 battleship already.
