The Stealth Hippopotamus: So the over application of bronzer is the new black face?!

Since you and so many other people seem to have trouble with this concept, I'll make it simple: Are you wearing makeup to make you look like a different race? Yes? Take it the fark off.

Yeah...1) Those last two examples you picked? Lots of outrage. 2) She wasn't acting, she was wearing a Halloween costume.

I can draw pictures and use one syllable words if this continues to confuse you.

That was my first reaction when someone shared this... that it looked more like a fake-a-bake OD than blackface and she should have gone with that.  However... come on!

No, it isn't that... it is a bad idea to do blackface period, but hers looks more like a Jersey Shore getup gone wrong.  No points to Ms. Hough for screwing up her bad idea, of course.

Also, besides "good looking woman," who is Julianne Hough?

I would agree, except for the id card part of her costume that portrays an African-American.  I also had to Google her.  Turns out she is country music singer as well as ballroom dancer, guess that explains a lot.  A little racism plays well in that crowd.

I meant that it is obvious that she was going for blackface but ended up with guido-face, but despite that she doesn't get off the hook just because her execution was poor.

I don't quite understand peoples' obsession with blackface. It's like a person coming up to you and saying, "To get to the other side." There's just no context to it. "Yo check this. BLACKFACE!" Yeah alright dog. Why? "Because blackface." Sure thing.

Personally to me, as long as she was trying to emulate a specific character from a show, that makes it okay. The intent didn't seem to be generic racist tropes like black face is typical of.

I remember people going ballistic on Jon Hamm (and Tina Fey for basically writing/okaying this). People who actually watched the show knew it was basically a joke about being black in a racist, "still-okay-to-wear-blackface" entertainment environment.

There is context, she was going dressed up as someone else. Why should black people be off limits as characters for white people to dress up as? That on its own makes no sense. I fully appreciate that in context and with the history of blackface it is a problem, but I think we need to move beyond it. If you dress up as a black person to make fun and degrade black people, you're a dick. If you go to a fancy dress party as a black character, no problem whatsoever.

go ahead, sort of.

Growing up in the decidedly non-PC 60's we might have dressed as Aunt Jemima or a pickaninny but we knew enough not to do the blackface thing.

From a different article about the subject:

"And while the idea of blackface on Halloween is complicated - the line between "tribute" and mockery is a dicey one - the blackface costume here, a white man dressed as the kind of white men who made a living mocking black men, falls resoundingly in the offensive box."

It like of like she is thinking "This is exactly the type of cracker that would wear blackface."
