I would never carrion with vultures like that.

They are staying close because they want to be first on the scene when she crashes.

Part of me knows and likes birds, and kind of understands where she's coming from.

The other part immediately thought they would be smart enough to know humans can't fly, and came to the same conclusion conclusion ZAZ.

Sure, they're not predatory birds that would kill you outright, but to echo above, you probably look like a flying buffet cart waiting to be delivered, lady.

Condors are farking awesome. Period.

They are farking massive and they can live to be incredibly old (60+ years). They mate for life.

It's a shame they are still endangered. Though their current numbers (low hundreds) is much better than the few/couple dozen they estimated were left back in the 80's.

As long as you look alive and healthy, no problem.

but yeah I'm not surprised, even the dumbest of birds have different personalities. They vary a lot on aggression, curiosity, interest in affection, different behaviors.

They should make it legal to hunt poachers.

Let's go full on 'Most Dangerous Game'

There are 7 billion people on this planet.
I'd rather see the ones combing the Serengeti with rifles and poison getting hunted  vs elephants, tigers, etc...

Earth Flight - Africa

One of the best mini-series on birds of the world, is Earth Flight.  Laced through the episode on birds are several close-up pictures of vultures in flight (including cameras mounted on vultures).  The first scene with vultures starts at 8:10 and then interlaced through the episode.  You don't have to be a bird watcher or nature lover to appreciate the camera work involved in this 6 part mini-series. Make sure you change the settings to watch it in HD.

"She had applied for a conservation post and before she knew it was in charge of a vulture study, despite knowing nothing about the birds of prey."

Sounds about right. She also apparently knows nothing about paragliding, or she wouldn't have been strapped to the crotch of a trainer for all of those photos. The photographer tried to hide it with angles/lighting, but you can see extra limbs anyway.

I've heard it from more than one source to discount the Unlikely tag.

I've heard that eagles tend to be pretty rad too.

Don't forget that supposedly 99% of India's vulture population died off over a decade or so due to eating livestock treated with diclofenac.

I love vultures. They seem very smart.

There are great photos on vulpro.com. I'm thinking this one needs captioning:

I think you are thinking specifically of the California Condor.  That is a huge, powerful birds and yes, they almost went extinct in the wild.  A really great success story in conservation that is finally showing meaningful progress.  Back in the 80's the state actually went out and captured every single California Condor known to exist in the wild and gave them to the San Diego and Los Angeles zoos for breeding.  Eventually they started releasing the birds back into the wild and there are a couple hundred out there now.

The Andean Condor in South America is not really threatened I don't think.

But this woman isn't working with any sort of Condor.  Condors are specific to the Americas.  TFS says she is working with Cape Vultures, which would make a lot more sense given that she is in South Africa.

She better hope the vultures aren't intelligent enough to figure out that if they rip the glider apart with their talons her flight trajectory will change drastically to one that favors them getting a meal.

I don't know why vultures get such a bad rap. They're polite enough to wait until after you've died on your own before they start eating you. We certainly aren't that considerate towards our food, so I don't know where we get off giving them a hard time.

They roost near Cleveland, too.

I 'd never seen one until I was about 30, then I as driving down some back country road and saw one just standing there next to the road  At first I thought it was a novelty mailbox post, but then it moved.

HUGE farkers.

Then, later that month, I saw another one chilling in the bushes at a gas station in Suburbia where I work.  They're even bigger when you get out of your car and WHAM giant bird five feet from you...
