I wonder how it got started doing that?  The owners had to have trained it.

Cats really are stupid like that. 'I think today I shall jump from the couch, to the windowsill, and then on to the fireplace because I am a cat and fark you'.

I doubt it was trained.

Cats get it in their heads to do something, and they do it. They are stubborn like that.

Most likely, it decided to sit on the ball (for whatever cat-like reasons) and once it failed the first time, it was like, "Fark you ball, I WILL sit on you!".

It helps that cats have excellent balance.

That cat has way too much time on its hands.

I have a cat who does that, too.  He stands on my (admittedly glorious) rack, leans against my throat, and does that until I put his butt in the crook of my elbow.  He doesn't want to be petted, just wants to make it clear that I will be furniture, even if it inconveniences me, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

/I do occasionally lob his ass across the room into a cushy chair, just to say "Fark YOU"

Don't know about that.  One of my cats still jumps and balances on my head while I'm on the computer because fark you, he's a cat.

well that explains so much.  my cat has the EXACT same posture when taking a massive dump.  no wonder i can't knock him over when he's doing his business.  apparently this is the pose of the infinitely balanced.  i'd bet by examining the size of some of my cat's turds, we'd all agree that my cat is much more talented.
