I think the guy who did Bleeding Gums Murphy died.  Not sure if you'd count him as a recurring character.

But one thing I can tell you, any time I hear the wind blow it will whisper the name Edna. And so let us part with a love that will echo through the ages.

It's even creeeeepier when you consider the producers were thinking of killing a character on the show...

My hypotheses:

1.- The producers went for the gusto and literally killed the actor playing the character.

2.- A struggling voice actor from the show knew it was going to be their character and decided to off another cast member to force the producers hands and not lose their job.

3.- The Edna actress was a hell of a teamplayer and decided to take one for the team. She was going to die anyway, so might as well make it count.

Which one is right?

Very few cartoons are broadcast live, it's a terrible strain on the animators' wrists.

That would explain why the Clerks animated series didn't last.

James Earl Jones

I saw the History of Superheroes on PBS, hosted and narrated by Liev Schreiber.  He's got a great voice for that kind of work.

Bleeding Gums Murphy died;  James Earl Jones is still alive.

(Great episode, BTW. The appearance of Bleeding Gums' spirit in the clouds, followed by Mufasa, Darth Vader, then "This. Is CNN." was one of the greatest moments in the show.)

Looks like next Sunday is The Simpsons episode with a death. Then we'll see who they picked.

If Wallace had been going downhill to the point of not wanting to keep on with the show, I could see them writing her out.

It's good to see that they will not try to replace her voice on the show. They retired Hartman and Grau's characters when they died too. Makes you wonder if the death of a main cast member will be what kills the show in the end. If something happened to Cartwright or Castenella tomorrow, what would happen? I'm sure Jean and Groening and Brooks would be in favor of the ending the show. But could FOX overrule them and re-cast? I remember when the cast was holding out for more money, FOX threatened it, but if the producers or even the other cast members weren't on board, what what happen? Say what you want about the quality and creativity of The Simpsons nowadays, but it's still a moneymaker.

Ages
Dan Castellanella (55)
Julie Kavner (63)
Nancy Cartwright (56)
Yeardley Smith (49)
Hank Azaria (49)
Harry Shearer (69)

Meaning they were 30, 38, 31, 24, 24, 44 when they started doing this. Wowzers.

Al Jean has said in light of Marcia's death that Krabappel was not the one they planned on killing.

I am worried that Harry Shearer is getting up there in age. That would be a much bigger blow if he died.

am I the only one who's annoyed that they brought back Lunch Lady Doris? They wrote off the character specifically because Doris Grau died. I can only imagine that outrage if they brought back Lionel Hutz or Troy McClure. I guess they could ease the rage if they hired Billy West to do their voice, though it's always bothered me that Zapp Branigan was obviously meant to be played by Hartman.

Well, we know which character is going to get killed off now.
