Neither do residents of the other 49 states.  Here is the Pennsylvania flag.  The tweezers are on the left is supposed to be some sort of pen nib, or something.

I'm pretty sure all of those look terrible. I get what he's going for with the red white and blue color pattern, but that's a bit too uniform for me. And I really do think that most state flags are currently terrible (I don't like the "state seal on a bedsheet" style), I don't think those are any better. And why did he try and ruin New Mexico's flag? It was fine before.

His flags stick to guidelines set out nearly 50 years ago by the International Federation of Vexillological Association.

Those say flags should be simple, have meaningful symbols, two or three colors, no text or seal, and be distinct from others.

Fark you.  No, seriously - fark you.  A flag is a symbol, designed and approved by the people whose state or nation it symbolizes. They don't need you to come in and tell them they have to look like everyone else.  Why not just propose that all states unite into one big nation, and do away with borders altogether?

What an asshole thing to propose, redesigning all the state flags to look like each other.

Plus, your designs suck.

And did I mention, fark you?

In a posting on his company website, Mitchell said state flags as a group violate just about every rule of flag design

The first rule of flag design is that there are no rules for flag design.

Everybody knows that, you pretentious douchebag.

No, there are not.

There is a group of hipster douchebags that get together to talk about flags, and they decided to write down "rules" for designing flags, based on a close examination of their own anuses.

Why does it matter that the individual state flags violate some international douche standards?  They're  not the important flag in the US.

Most states do need new flags though, because a lot of them look exactly like all the other ones. Oh hey, which state flag is that? It's a circular smudge on a blue field.

2013-10-26 02:33:05 PM
Those are the ugliest flags I have ever seen. And I love how he acknowledges Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico have iconic flags that don't need to be changed --- but he changed them anyway! fark you dude, go design semaphore flags and leave the state flags to the real people.

2013-10-26 02:34:30 PM
TFA only has 18 or so.  You can see what abortion he cooked up for your state here.

One thing that struck me is how this ass-clown wanted to remove Civil War symbology, but failed miserably.  For example the new design for Mississippi looks almost EXACTLY like the national flag of the Confederacy.

Could These Redesigned State Flags Bring America Together?

No.  No, they cannot.  They will instead piss off a large portion of the country, people in each and every state, and instead of having just one "Dixie" flag, you'll now have 51.

Liberals will, of course, embrace the new multinational ethnically diverse culturally sensitive flags with open arms.  Conservatives will erect flag poles for the first time in their lives just to hang up the "real" flag of their state.  And the 20% in the middle will, yet again, roll their eyes that anyone in the modern world gives two shiats about whether or not we even have a flag, much less care enough to fight over it.

2013-10-26 02:35:18 PM
New Hampshire's current flag is ugly as sin.  Same goes for every other state seal on a blue background.  You can't tell them apart at a distance, the design elements are overly complex, etc.

And yet the proposed redesign just looks so generic as to be meaningless.  NH's flag needs a redesign, but not this one, which seems to suggest nothing more than being a US state.

2013-10-26 02:35:43 PM
I like the Montana flag, I suppose.

But the overall feel of the flag design is very "we need flags for different planets in a cheap sci-fi series or movie".

Mobile Infantry flag, from Starship Troopers, came to mind.

Louisiana has a good flag for the crazy bird:

On the other hand, we need a rewrite of state flags that actually have the name of the state on them. Y'know, for the stupid people. Idaho residents are so dumb that their flag has to say it twice:

I don't mind the state seal being on the flag. It's not like we feel the need to pretend we're our own nation, like Texas.

If someone did want to do a simplified version of the NH flag, I'd say just use a silhouette of the Old Man of the Mountain. Sure, it's not as geometric as this guy seems to insist on, but it would still be easy to identify.
