How the hell do old people get tricked so often? Didn't they used to be functional adults a decade or two ago? Shouldn't they be smarter than younger folks?

This has never made sense to me.

Hawaii's not part of the U.S. - that's why there's such a controversy over Barack Obama's birth certificate.

What was the vacation like? Grey, dreadful and boring with very high taxes that don't seem to go towards anything tangible?

Even assuming low level retail (i.e. what the user pays vs what the dealers pay) price - $1700 per oz (I think this figure is a bit high but it's been years since I bought and this is what the google tells me is current avg street price) - they'd have to be carrying approx 60 kilos of the stuff to reach $7m.

That's some serious cop math.

They should have known it was a scam as soon as they found out the hotel was in Scarborough.  What a shiate hole.

which is nearly equivalent (1 $A = 0.96 $US)

I thought it was an oxymoron too, but considering it was a transcontinental trip, I suppose it would make sense.

Hell, my dream trip would be to Scotland.

Really? Are you sure about that? Because that would make the meth crazy expensive.

And if they're the same, why bother having separate ones? I'm going to have to look this one up.

Haven't the Aussies figured out how to make their own meth, or do they have to import it from halfway around the world? Doesn't sound very cost effective to me.

Sure, the mountains are pretty, and they probably got to see an elk, but a trip to Banff isn't worth spending the rest of your life looking over your shoulder because you cost an international drug ring $7m.

Would it kill them to say how the vacation was?  Where did they go?  What did they do?  I'm curious about how elaborate the scheme was.  Did the bad guys just dump this couple in a Vancouver hotel for a week or did they really go all out?

7 kilos - $7 million
breaks down to $1000/gram
breaking bad has taught me that on the street, meth is sold by the sixteenth of an ounce.
1/16 oz = ~1.8 gm
are aussie meth heads really spending $1800 on a small amount of meth?

All that's said is they were brought to scenic Scarborough...good god that should have tipped them off right away...damned old people.

Further research suggests that meth is ridiculously expensive in Australia (600-700/g vs 75/g in the US - I don't get it - you guys have a pseudoephedrine shortage?) so it's still cop math but only the standard 3x street value

Even Walter White's blue wasn't selling for that much in his fictional empire. His was about $60 a gram IIRC.

If there was an easy way to sell a kilo of meth for $1M... well I'd have to reconsider my choice of career.

THat's what I was thinking.  Have to figure out a way to get the luggage back after the mules return home, but as long as you're not creeping out the marks, it's a pretty good scam.

The evil scheme to shut down the Australian government at $1M/pound would have required 24,000 pounds or 12 tons of meth.

The discrepancy of why this cop meth math is three times the normal price is resolved for the shipping charges of for 12 tons of product from Canada to western Australia.

Wrong.

Meth dealers go to Belize.

But after a dream week in North America, the couple became suspicious about their bags on their return to Western Australia and reported themselves to Customs.

Wow, good luck with that.  You just cost somebody 7 kilos of meth.  Somebody who knows where you live.  Cop math or not, that's a lot of meth, not to mention the loss of a solid import route.  Sleep tight.

Because we don't exactly have Mexico right there.

but can't you buy sudafed? Mexico has almost nothing to do with the meth trade in the bulk of the US.

2013-10-26 06:25:44 PM
Nah most sudafed requires a prescription these days.
I only know of one chemist I can buy it otc from, and it's a small country town 300km away from me.
On the east coast it sells for about 650 a gram, Perth is much more expensive as it's in the middle of nowhere.

I thought the point of choosing to sell meth, instead of cocaine or heroin, was that it didn't have to be smuggled across international borders.  Because, you know, the you could just put the farking lab anywhere.

Evidently Aussie's  aren't real good with sciencey stuff, so they import, which would explain the high cost.  I'm sure buying cocaine is a lot cheaper in Colombia.

2013-10-27 12:46:32 AM
i scoff at this, if meth was selling at prices like that, they would be overrun in no time by people trying to turn a quick buck.

As a former meth head, i can assure you that it was nowhere near 7 million bucks. 1/4 gram was around 30 bucks from a reputable dealer, 40 if you were buying from trailer trash trying to make money.

so lets assume the entire batch was broke down into 1/4 gram baggies (which no one would ever do).

1 kilo = 1000 grams   (this is a given)
x4 for 1/4g = 4000 baggies of product
x7 for there being 7 kilo grams

28,000 baggies of product.

now assume the cops imagined that meth heads come from wall street and paid 100 bucks for a baggie, even then you are only looking at 2.8 million

in all honesty, the real street value would come up to around a million bucks, but cop math has random numbers to make themselves look good.

also please don't do drugs. and if your family or friends get into these drugs try and get them the help they need to kick the habit.
