If you're illiterate and have zero long term memory I suppose you could confuse the two.

meh,

I can honestly say that, while that are somewhat similar, I would certainly never confuse the two.

Why does there have to be a war. They can both coexist, and wage war on the true enemy.

My liver.

Listen Jack, square bottles store, stack, and ship better. Also, googling around it looks like Marvin Sutton lived an interesting life.

2013-10-25 11:49:51 PM
I quit drinking Jack back when they started watering it down.

2013-10-26 01:13:16 AM
If they used a round bottle, they'd be open to similar complaints from dozens of other whiskey brands.

Jack Daniels is swill only fit for mixing. George Dickel is the one you want for sipping.

2013-10-26 01:17:16 AM
Go right ahead and wage war, I'll be over here drinking Kentucky bourbon.

fark that Mash shiat, drink real bourbon.

Because Jack is the only whiskey in a square bottle with a black label. Fark you Brown & Co. or Seagrams or whomever makes that crap now. Think I'll go get some Evan Williams just to piss you off. It is real bourbon after all, unlike Jack.

2013-10-26 02:02:15 AM
In other news, I'm drinking Johnny Walker right now so whatever :)

Ugh. God. Seagram's.

Just reading the name makes me urpy. Their liquors are made from gasoline.

Bulleit small batch rye.  Thank me later.

I'd rather drink straight tails than Old No. 7 Varnish Remover

One of these days I need to try rye. I don't think I know a single person who drinks it, but (saying this without research) assuming it's the same initial ingredient I keep finding beer made from, I might like it...

Our dog was named Whiskey when we adopted him. My wife and son didn't care for that so they started calling him Scruffy. Since he is a mixed breed terrier and was once named Whiskey, I tell people that he is a Jack Daniel's Terrier.

I just spent the night drinking Jim Beam and iced tea out of mason jars.  Life is good, and all these un-aged "white dog" whiskeys are pretty bad.

2013-10-26 03:15:52 AM
Honestly, a trade dress claim by itself, without a copyright infringement claim to go along with it, is pretty weak. I would almost wager money that Jack Daniels knows they would never win at trial, but they're banking on the hope that Sutton is too small and young an operation to be able to afford hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees and costs, and will just settle for changing its packaging to make the case go away.

Jack is real Bourbon. They don't like to talk about it much. It's almost like they're ashamed of themselves...

It's real bourbon. Just overpriced. Seriously, Evan is a 6 year blend these days, Jack is a 4 year blend. Jack costs $20 or so, Evan $12 or so. Why on earth do people

\Drinking Old Grand-Dad Bottled in Bond right now.

2013-10-26 03:16:27 AM
Real Kentucky bourbon please, haven't hadJD since they went down from 86 to 80 proof, over 30 years ago. Just say no to the green label stuff.
/Favorite is Blantons bourbon.

2013-10-26 03:18:10 AM
Yeah, I could see how the idiots at J.D.'s could mix up the two.... being class A dumbasses and all.

unamused: I quit drinking Jack back when they started watering it down.

I quit drinking it back when I was 15 and it tasted like ass.

/Prefer Crown or Beam/Beam Black best, but would even happily take Crow or Seagrams over Jack (Actually, just do not drink Jack) or if my mother is coming by for a holiday visit and you can't exactly strut around with a lowball.. Kahlua or Baileys in my coffee.

Think Bourbon, but without the corn sweetness and spicier. Rye is great in winter, and is really what recipes like the Manhattan and Old Fashioned were intended for.

It's always worth keeping a bottle of Old Overholt on the shelf, IMO.

Is white whiskey a fancy name for moonshine? Or is it just whiskey that hasn't been aged in oak barrels?

Interesting. I'll keep it in mind, although I don't drink hard liquor much anymore. Might make an exception for it though.

The article said Sutton killed himself rather than go to prison for making moonshine.  That's another example of your kind, compassionate government driving people to suicide because of their oppressive laws.

2013-10-26 03:31:45 AM
This is about as stupid as when Harley Davidson tried to trademark the "sound".

Some of those laws are intended to keep people from accidentally poisoning other people. Just sayin'.

Paris1127: Is white whiskey a fancy name for moonshine? Or is it just whiskey that hasn't been aged in oak barrels?

It seems to be similar.  From what I gather, you use a predominantly corn-based mash which is then distilled to around 160 proof.  It is then aged in either used or uncharred barrels for 6-12 months.  I haven't found if there is a preference in using pot stills or reflux stills, though.

I have no idea when it comes to whiskey -- just that the threads are always entertaining -- but I sure do know an adorable dog when I see one.

You, sir, have an adorable dog who deserves every letter of that long, fluffy name.

One shot of that stuff tried to kill me. I'd never had rye before, but apparently it damn near sends me into anaphylactic shock. So no, thank you.

I can drink their regular bourbon like it was water though, good shiat.

The problem with Scotch is that any Scotch I'd actually want to drink, I wouldn't want to have to pay for; and any Scotch I'd be willing to pay for I wouldn't want to have to drink!

/cheap Bourbon is still good, and good Bourbon is still cheap

Oh, for heaven's sake! Evan Williams bottles look way more similar to Jack Daniels than the Sutton (which doesn't look all that similar from what I've seen.) They're just being dicks, now.

This.

Unless, of course, they're expecting the consumers in question to be illiterate, in which case they  may have a point.

Maybe.

I think even the illiterate can tell the difference between transparent and opaque, and considering the region of the country we're talking about, I'm sure they can identify the word "white" no matter how illiterate they are.
