Ya well I've only been on active duty in the MC for nearly 12 years and I've heard people call it a hat multiple times, myself included. Yes, it's typically done sarcastically. But no, hell no, will you catch me calling a baseball cap or such a "cover" outside of work.

This is such a silly topic of argument.

Care to argue any further absolutes?

The dudes who call it a "cover" off-duty, and to civilians, are usually the same annoying assholes who think referring to their wife as "Household Six" is hilarious.

Farking Canuck: EvilEgg: You should see what the pope makes his special forces wear before you complain about the hats.

Ass-less leather chaps?

All chaps are ass-less.

It's just the latest move in Obama's scheme to turn the Marines gay.

Just ditch the stupid hats already.

Is Beretghazi a scandal yet?

When the USMC starts calling you out on your derp, it's time throw in the towel, 'Merica.

whistleridge: I don't get this stupid 'scandal', and haven't gotten it for some days now.

BOTH SETS OF HATS LOOK EQUALLY RIDICULOUS. They're both horribly outdated early 19th century men's headwear that somehow failed to die out along with the stock and the culotte. WTF makes one more macho or less ugly than the other??

Hell, I didn't get this "girly hat" conspiracy when it cropped up in his first term

studebaker hoch

I read online that Obama is forcing the Marines to check the religion of everyone they kill, and administer last rights in the victim's religion.

It's true!

Don't say that. I'm serious. If you keep saying that in a few weeks you will see some Fwdfwdfwd email claiming that and pointing to a confidential White House insider named studebaker hoch as the source. Then a week after that it will be a topic of discussion on Fox and Friends.

No I mean "it's true" that I read it online.  The English language is so ambiguous you can say anything and not lie.

Anyone who believes Faux Newbs deserves what they get.

It was made by grossmont, who posted it above, based on my earlier comments.  I am so sorry.

Again, the point I was making about it being a cover was directed to detecting the BS from the original NY Post story (the one that the Marine Corps has completely refuted as being made up from air.)  The author of the NY Post article (the original one, not the one they replaced it with on their website) claimed to have spoken to a Marine Officer who served on the uniform committee and quoted that officer as referring to the item as a "hat."

I was calling into question the veracity of that reporter (or her ethics) as I found it very doubtful that a Marine Officer would refer to the item as a "hat" when the accepted practice is to call it a "cover."   If she was quoting him/her and wanted to make the term more identifiable to the public, the correct way to do it would have to use the quotes and then brackets:  "......cover (hat)....."    So either she likely never really spoke to a Marine Officer or, she breached ethics and altered their exact quote.

Notice again, when the reporter for the Stars & Stripes actually did contact a Marine on the uniform committee in response to the story - he repeatedly (as she quote him) referred to the item as a cover.

Given that fact of what a BS story the entire thing turned out to be, I would claim I was pretty damned prescient in noting the original reporter used a term that could be evidence she never even talked to a Marine.

This could just be a cover story.
