Too much money and effort has already gone into the Internet to reverse course now

And the majority of the money and effor that was used to invest and work in the infrastructure was and is American money. No one is stopping any other country from putting in the money and effort but the thing is, no one wants to do it. It's freakin' hard work. It's easier to whine about how the Americans are all big meanie spies and they should stop and make it easier for non-American companies to create their own infrastructure.

Pfft, yeah, like that's going to happen, world.

On the one hand, there's this article. On the other hand, if the US ever lost its internet preeminence, child porn and murder for hire would run rampant. I'm not sure I want eastern European nations to have as much freedom and influence as America has.

Goddammit. I can't play Civ V as my laptop is too old and can't handle it. But I did beat the Americans first a few weeks ago for the Apollo program (playing the Persian side of things, I got my ass handed to me a few times trying that route with the Chinese in a marathon game).

Oh yeah. The article. I don't know why this guy thinks the internet as a whole is a "US colony". So many people participate in it all over the planet, sharing whatever. Dominance? Why? Is he pissed off at the US? Beat us at our own game then if that's the issue. Hell I talk to people in different countries every damn day, for fun, profit, work, whatever. Maybe I didn't read it correctly but in my reality, there is no (or should not be) any "dominance".

If you have more than a handful of cannons to fight off the crown in civ 4: Colonization you were doing something drastically wrong. Of course that game was incredibly disappointing for so many reasons.

Sure, a lot of websites will stop working, but with all the exchanges in Europe I doubt that the entire internet will go down. Internet infrastructure exists in a lot of places, not just the US. I know people who run their own DNS server, it isn't as if they need the US to resolve the address for them. And the data sure as hell isn't routed though the US if the server isn't in the US.

Just look at the numbers

Of course he fails to mention that without the US government, US military, and places like MIT there would be no internet for him to biatch about in the first place. He'd still be on a Hayes 1200 dialing into a Wildcat BBS to play some stupid door game.

2013-10-25 08:27:36 PM
I still think the easy way to stop US espionage on foreign governments is for the various governments to round up all the people at the telcos and internet providers who have been actively involved in helping the US break comms, have them charged and convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage, and have them executed.

If Angela Merkel had any balls she'd have already done that to her telephone provider. "Oh, so Obama's listening to my phone calls? Send in the armed forces to take over Vodafone, and let's get some stadiums set up for mass trials and firing squads."

But no, corporations are supposedly all innocent and the US agencies are accomplishing this all by themselves with no help from anyone, yeah right.

Yeah...we've got broadband. Have had it for a while. Mind you, we're not like Singapore. But then we have more area to cover than Singapore.

Three things I do that must frustrate the hell out of data miners. And that's good.

1. I Regularly power off my DSL modem at night. Comes the new dawn, new IP address!
2. I also clear out my cookies and other detrius at least once a day.
3. Firefox + Adblock, flashblock and noscript for casual web browsing.

Any ads I do see from my whitelisted sites are totally not aimed at me, so I know it's working.

Of course, I'm not a high-spending type. I just buy what I need and when I have the money.

My kids however, do the facebook thing, and play those online games that provide a wealth of information to data miners.

Now I respect your attempt at educating me in my own countrys' history but allow me to point out that my Socialist Canada is a colony of England? We are still subject to English rule, and therefore it was MY goddamn forefathers that spanked yours.
