GAH! I freakin' hated that. Not saying it should necessarily be a crime to touch a pregnant woman's belly without her permission, but why in the hell do strangers think it's appropriate to do this?

I've never, ever seen it happen. Maybe I just don't hang around enough pregnant women.

Don't pregnant women, universally, say that they hate it when strangers come up and touch their bellies?

When my daughter was pregnant it happened all the time.  But it was always women doing the rubbing.  It would be pretty creepy if a guy did it.

I can't imagine doing that.  I can imagine it being done, though, as I remember strangers reaching out to touch my nieces as I walked through a crowd.  Don't touch other people without their permission! Is that a difficult thing to process?

I had absolute strangers, no men, only women, do this to me at least a half-dozen times. This started when I was around six months pregnant. While I restrained myself from smacking their hands away I didn't hesitate giving them a piece of my mind.

Wow, so not only do I have morning sickness, swelling and bloating, labour and postpartum depression to look forward to, but complete strangers will touch my stomach like some communal Buddha statue?

I think this procreation thing is not my cup of tea. I'll just stick with the practice.

I think it might have happened to my wife.  I don't remember though.

Should it be a crime to touch a pregnant woman's stomach without her permission?

Yes, it's called battery. Were I to ever find myself with sprog and some biatch did that, she'd get a right hook to the face or a busted finger. "She attacked me officer! I had to protect myself and BABY!"

I can't believe they had to make a law for something so fundamentally obvious.  People shouldn't be touching other people without permission for any reason.

I must look (and be) feral, because no one ever touched me. I didn't have morning sickness, and very little labor, no postpartum depression that I'm aware of. So if you want kids, don't get worried about crap that might not happen.

Mind you if you don't want kids; cool. I think I would have preferred some sort of test drive first, myself... :P

Do strangers also run up and rub random babies when they see them?
That's essentially what they are doing while violating 2 people's personal space.

Even most dogs and cats wouldn't let a stranger rub their belly. That trust must be earned first.

The article says the whole thing started with the case of a man who was charged with harassment for the unwelcome touching of a pregnant woman's stomach. I don't understand why a new law needs to be passed if there's already one on the books to cover the situation.

Yeah, why? I've done it and I'm a guy. Well, actually I have not done it because I am not a "rubber," I am a patter. I pat bellies, even on dogs. But I've never had a woman take exception. Maybe it's because I'm so good looking.

It really does happen and I wasn't above swatting hands away, especially when I was extremely ill with my last one and being touched could make me throw up (no, not kidding).

I have to admit that I resisted the urge to reach out and do the buddah belly rub when my daughter without law was pregnant. She was so cute and round and adorable! Never ever done it or felt the urge with another pregnant belly (I do still do it to my husband though).

She asked me if I wanted to feel the baby moving and would grab my hand and put it where she felt kicks...nuthin. I would take my hand away and watch the alien being start boiling under her skin. She'd grab my hand back...nuthin. Finally, when she was really big and the kidlet was killing her with kicks and rolls, she'd ask me to put the kid to sleep, grabbed my hand and shoved it onto her belly. Worked every time!

Hopefully.

I like cupping their breasts and saying 'those are filling out nicely, the baby will be well fed'. Sure they get pissed, but it's much more satisfying then rubbing a fat belly.
