Top end for Cruz is about 22% of voters, only evangelicals and the truly nutty in the US would even consider voting for Cruz; besides he is Canadian and cannot be elected President anyway. Just hoping that open primaries start for 2016, that would at least allow the possibility of a candidate that actually represents the majority of the US and not just a cadre of party members representing the fringe on both ends of the spectrum. Christie is slimming down so maybe that is possible, besides Hillary any thoughts on who on the Dem side that will try to make a run. If it is Biden, Cruz would have a  marginally better chance, but a third party would have real chance.  Anderson is being warmed up.

But the GOP aced the PhD program at the Richard Daley school of vote rigging (as they proved back in '00).

I'm sure Governor Goodhair is more than willing to play Jeb to Cruz's GWB if it came down to it.

David Frum has been drinking again from the sounds of that article.

In a frantic effort to mobilize supporters, the Democrats abruptly veered toward more populist economics. Senator Elizabeth Warren began to demand not just fines on JP Morgan, but the actual breakup of too-big-to-fail financial institutions. Too little, too late: instead of the gains they'd been counting on in 2013, the Democrats lost 15 House seats and control of the Senate in November 2014.

So to review, the GOP can bring the country and perhaps even the world to the brink of economic collapse over a passed-and-found-constitutional piece of legislation, but it's the Dems that will not only fail to take the House but lose the Senate, because the recovery was not quite as robust as it could have been.

Also, I love the "When such an event struck in the early spring, the U.S. economy toppled back into recession." part. Hey, we don't know! Maybe a supervolcano will errupt! Maybe aliens will invade and enslave the worlds population! That would certain put a damper on Democrat's plans for '16, right?

But it's never wise to predict the future by projecting forward from the present.

Got this far and realized that the author was going to base his argument on something strange and incoherent that only makes sense inside his head.

2013-10-25 11:39:31 AM
Fark it, if the Republicans win the Senate and more of the House in 2014. I'd probably vote for a moderate R president in 2016 (though not Cruz, not ever), in hopes the Tea Party goes back to sleep so my kids can hope to have jobs in the future. fark it.

book it.

Unlike Romney in 2012, Cruz's conservative allegiance could not be questioned, freeing him to write the vaguest platform and conduct the most issue-free campaign of any Republican since George H.W. Bush in 1988

Ah, I get it. So the only way a republican can win is to not have to run on issues, but instead on good will. Good luck with that in the future.

2013-10-25 11:40:22 AM
WTF am I reading, Fark needs a fiction tag.

So the author's hope is that there is a reccession in 2014 so Cruz can win.  Oh and he must run against a candidate who currently says she isn't running who was first weakened by a primary challanger, yes if that all happens and Cruz hides under some coats until 2016 so he doesn't say or do anything stupid there is a possibility that he might win.

They weren't winning the Senate even before the Cruz-clusterfark.  They will be lucky if they keep the house.

This isn't pre-WWII Nazi Germany.  Cruz doesn't have a chance in hell.

/Rubio, Christie, or *gasp* Bush will be the nominee

2013-10-25 11:42:44 AM
Sorry, author, but you're not going to get to enjoy massive, institutional infighting amongst Democrats for at least a generation. Once we've got real control, then the crazies can come out of the woodwork and start demanding legislation be crafted for their narrow, insane BS. And then you can talk about a fracturing of the Democratic party. I mean, it's GOING to happen again at some point. But you'll probably be dead by the time it does.

2013-10-25 11:43:02 AM
A Cruz presidency would probably end up as Bioshock Infinite. Only without a cool floating city.

2013-10-25 11:43:18 AM
Typical conservative: start from the conclusion and build backward from there.

2013-10-25 11:44:54 AM
At this point, wouldn't it be easier for Conservative media to just officially divorce themselves from reality, and just start telling their listeners that the Republican won, and then just fill in their daily news coverage with fan-fiction of a Cruz presidency?

I'd have more respect for the Republicans if they nominated Vermin Supreme.

Let them believe this. Put him  on the front page of every newspaper at all times. Give him all the air time he desires. Talk about his ideas at every opportunity. Make him the face of the republican party. Then we can just sit back and listen to how those damn Mexicans stole the election from him.

Ted Cruz determinedly took a position of all-out opposition.  In an interview on Univision, he chatted in Spanish with host Jorge Ramos, then turned to English to deliver a stark message: "This is America. We obey the law. People who can't deal with that don't belong here."

I thought Ted Cruz doesn't speak Spanish nearly well enough to do this.

By his own admission he spoke "Spanglish" at his house. Dewhurst felt confident enough in his own abilities to speak Spanish trumping Cruz's that he challened Cruz to a debate in Spanish.

Goddamn, that would probably work on a good 5% of the population.

"So what do you think about President Clinton's tax reform plan?"
"Pfft! I see you're content to be lead by the nose by the LIEberal media! President CRUZ will eventually have those traitors at CNN and FoxNews arrested."

Nothing really changes, except a persons willingness to believe what makes them feel happy and safe, which is infinite.

Demographics. No Republican will win in 2016. Millions of immigrants come to this country every year. Meanwhile older Republicans are dying off. Nationally they are irrelevant.

Nope. In the past 15 years Pelosi, the Clintons, and Obama have gotten really good at blocking out the crazies.

A little too good, if you want my opinion, as I'm slightly to the left of Elizabeth Warren.
