Little white girl, of course it is.

Since this all happened 14 years ago, and both the parents are dead now, I think the point is moot.

Not indicted. An indictment was recommended.

Who did they figure out did it? I always assumed it was the weird older brother, and the parents covered it up, but did the DNA rule that out?

Fact still remains that had the parents not been filthy rich and well-connected to Denver's elite, this would never have been the legal clusterfark it became. Had they been regular schlubs like most other people, they would have died in prison.

We'll never know the killer but it almost makes me wish the feds had everyone's DNA on file just so we could end this thing. Howard Stern interviewed one of the criminal profilers who worked on the case and his job was to ask provoking questions. One question angered Patsy so much that she threw a chair. His opinion was that Patsy was very jealous of the attention JonBenet was getting and it centered around that.

If the point of the questions is to be provoking... why would he be surprised when someone gets pissed? I dunno... I'd be pissed if I were being wrongly blamed for my child's death and I had some guy "provoking" me about it.

In most(?) states a grand jury indictment is not valid without the prosecutor's signature. The grand jury indicted, but the DA refused to prosecute.

One of the best known cases of a grand jury being overruled by a prosecutor is also from Colorado, the Rocky Flats investigation.

Americans had generally been vaguely aware of child beauty pagents before this case, but had generally assumed that they were innocent affairs. Your toddler sees a pageant on TV, really wants to be part of it, so you put her on stage in a party dress and she sings the ABCs, and after the first of second iteration of this she gets bored with it and life returns to normal. That sort of thing.

The Ramsey case basically turned this assumption completely on its ear. Pageants were suddenly driven by the parents, not the kids, and the kids were wearing things decidedly less innocent than party dresses, and the whole thing was a lot more sinister than had been popularly imagined. Moreover, this happened during the 1990s, when it was all the rage in the literary world to tell stories about bigger and darker things happening just under the thin veneer of ordinary life: things that the general population would never even guess at as they went about their day-to-day activities.

It was a perfect storm. The public ate it up like candy, and the media, ever quick to spot and capitalize on that sort of trend, met the demand with gusto. The tabloids still harp on it endlessly, and why wouldn't they? It brings in the dough, even 17 years later.

I think the idea was that they were covering for the brother, but DNA evidence points to someone unknown outside the family. However, I am one of the many who always thought there was something bizarre about her parents' behavior.

And then they were exonerated by DNA in 2008.

"The charges didn't directly accuse the Ramseys of killing their daughter. Instead they alleged that the parents permitted JonBenét to be placed in a dangerous situation that led to her death and it accused them of helping whoever killed the girl."

Her gravesite is near where I live. There are all sorts of little ornaments and chotchkies hanging in the tree next to her grave. I found it while photographing an old cemetery years ago.
