If you really loved the environment, why don't you just marry it?

For the love of all that is good and holy, it's just a damn deer.  It's not like it was an elk or a moose.  Center punch the damn things then brake in a slow and controlled manner while going to the shoulder.  Stop the swerving about brake smashing multi-car accident crap.

Why don't Prius drivers use turn signals? The car is equipped with blinkers, right?

When will deer learn to look both ways before crossing the road?

I saw a Prius this morning with one of those "God loves our troops.  Especially the snipers" bumper stickers.  Prius - not just for eco-hippies anymore.

Actually, those stupid deer are responsible for more deaths that bears, mountain lions, sharks and venomous snakes combined.

First it was some kid in Massachusetts that killed a teacher with a Prius hidden in his backpack, then the fair in North Carolina where everyone was injured on the Prius ride, and now this.  WTF, Toyota?

There's nothing funnier than seeing an aggressive Prius driver.  It's like watching a gay dude act straight. Or the other way around.

I actually knew someone who died when their car hit a deer.  Even a small deer can do pretty substantial damage to a vehicle.  And if they jump at just the right time, they can take out a person even in the hardiest of vehicles, merely by coming through the windshield.

The best and only thing to do when you see a deer on the side of the road is to not change anything about your driving at all.  Any change startles them; slowing down, speeding up, turning, etc.  A slight turn could well mean they bolt - right in front of your vehicle.  The only time you should react to a deer is if it is already standing directly in your path, and then...well, there's too many variables, so it's too hard to say what to do then.

We're talking about Hanover. The deer has already been consumed.

Very likely. Reason being that the long legs puts their main body mass above the hood. Car hits legs and the deer body slams through the windshield.

It's even worse for moose, as they are taller and heavier.

You'd be safer to hit a cow. Unless you're in India.

I once hit a deer in the face with the passenger-side bumper of my truck. I was leaving a mountain resort in VA with another two cars full of kids following us. The road is windy and steep in sections with woods on both sides, so we were taking it pretty slowly. I caught a glimpse of something on my right that was darting out of the brush and *BAAAM*. I stopped and saw a deer on the side of the road with only her head on the pavement. I thought that I had broken its neck. Thought I had traumatized the kids but they just laughed at me for my worried look. Deer jumped up and took off before I could get to her to do my Dr. Pol imitation.

I am wondering just how small are those deer down your way, since a deer here would destroy anything smaller than a full size truck?  With an average weight of 170-180 lbs, a Prius doesn't stand a chance against a MI deer.  I've seen a Cavalier get towed away after hitting a first year buck.

/have seen 200+ lb deer
//they get bigger the further north you go.

Drive a 1 Ton dually diesel and deer are nothing more than a speed bump.  End of problem.

Of course, a Prius is a speed bump as well.

This being VA, however, I can understand why it shut down the whole road and backed up traffic.  IUp North, here, car/deer accidents happen every day.  We know how to handle it.  Even our Mini-Coopers are tough enough to take on a little-ole white tail.  VA is so fabulously tough that an inch of snow shuts them down.

Anybody else I can trollingly piss off today?

/yeah, trollingly was thrown in for the grammar nazis.

*shrug* I always do. Even changing lanes. Matter of fact, until my one speeding ticket about 8 years ago, I had a spotless driving record, too.

Didn't get the Prius (a used 2007) to feel all happy crunchy tofu munchy, got it because I regularly drive from Boston MA to Portland ME, at least 2 to 3 times a month. Filling my tank from 1/4 of a tank to full on $22-$25? Makes even the shiatty acceleration and foolish appearance worth while IMO. I'm saving upwards of $150/mo.

Don't LOVE the thing, though... Used to have an Impreza, and that thing was brilliant; acceleration was insane, handled beautifully, relatively cheap, but gobbled up gas.

the deer in VA are mostly white-tail... so anywhere from 88-290 lbs (small female to large male). they're heavier now that we're getting into the fall. hitting a 150 pound object at 70 mph isn't something you shrug off.

Even the small deer can be deadly if they ever get tangled up in the front wheels.

Yes, it will destroy your car (at least in terms of economic viability).  The point is to accept the fact that you are about to screw up your car, driver through the collision and maintain control of the vehicle instead of freaking out, losing control of your vehicle and involving other people in the event.

I've had Priuses fobbed off on me twice by rental car companies. I would literally buy ANYTHING to avoid buying a Prius. I've never driven a car I literally hated before. Hey, Toyota, I don't want to learn an entirely new way of starting a car and putting it in gear. DIAF. As for once you get the thing going, meh. It handles like crap with a wide turning radius, it's slow and heavy-feeling, but it's not THAT much worse than other eco-hybrids like the Civic. But that stupid fake gearshift (drive is BACK, reverse is FORWARD) and inexplicable keyless push button start was enough to drive me nuts.

You can get about 80 percent of the mileage from any subcompact, and the money you save on the purchase will make up any savings the Prius gets you on gas. For example, a 2011 Ford Fiesta with 30k miles on it costs the same ten grand as a typical 2007 Prius with 75k on it. The Fiesta gets very good mileage (34 combined), and it's a hoot to drive.

Yep. I've driven those as a rental, and while they are truly horrible, they handle better than a Prius. I'd rather drive a '70s Chevette than a Prius. If you ever drove one of those, with the driver's pedals offset about six inches from the steering wheel centerline, you'd understand just how much I hate the Prius.

I find it highly annoying when I borrow the wife's van and have to fish keys out of my pocket to start the thing.  I also would take exception to the wide turning radius comment, the newer models turn as tightly as anything I've ever driven, and without that end-of-the-steering-rack hyraulic honk that most American cars seem to suffer.  But, to each his own...

Grossest thing I saw as a child but also the most hilarious was when my friends and I were taking a road trip to some church camp in east Oklahoma.  On the way, driving past a sign for Lotawatah Road (yes, there's a lot of water), the highway merged to one lane and we were stuck behind an 18 wheeler.

Because traffic was so slow (about 40 mph), my friend was driving pretty close to the truck in front of us.  Without any warning, we suddenly got sprayed with this thick, red, hairy-in-parts goop, covering the entire windshield.  Because it was about freezing outside, the goop froze almost instantly and the wiper blades could only get just enough to be able to pull over to the nearest stop.

I don't know what kind of animal it was, but it was big enough to cover most the hood, all the windshield and some of the roof and sides with guts, blood and fur, all frozen to the car.

Aren't most automatics this way? PRNDL - P is all the way forwards, R is forwards, D is back ?

And there are many, many cars with pushbutton start - you pretty much have to do that with a keyless ignition system.

Yes, the Prius sucks, but I don't see these particular complaints, when there are SO many others to choose from.

Are there still any Prius buyers who give a damn about the environment? I thought those people all moved on to the Leaf a long time ago, that joke is so 2006. For the whole 2008-2011 era it was people cashing in on the rebates, now it's just suburbanites freaking out about their gas bills. Either way the car's way too large and heavy for real hippies.

My main problem with them is that they're utterly anemic. I'd love to see someone slap a turbocharger on that dinky little straight-4 though, that might make it a little more fun to drive.

The next generation is shaping up to be a nice little car, with tighter turning, stiffer suspension, and tighter handling in a slightly smaller package. We'll see if that trickles down to the actual consumer release, though.

Alright, my turn!

Last weekend I went out for a drive, because I couldn't sleep (yeah, I know. Nothing about that makes sense). It was roughly 6-7am. I ended up out on a 'country' road and just went with it. I was in the zone, listening to the new NIN (awesome)...just thinking about things. I come over a hill at 70mph (stupid on my part) and there were four good sized deer crossing the road. I'm a more...advanced driver (in age), so I know better than to panic. I stomp on the brake pedal and swerve a little to my left. Going to the right would have taken me off road and at that spot, down a good sized hill, filled with trees. As I do this, the first three animals bolt across the road, and the fourth just stops in it's tracks. I see my opening, so I turn back to the right and cut through them and kept on driving. Missed them all. This happened in the span of a few seconds and I don't think I dropped below 50mph. I did slow down a little bit afterwards though.

/CSB
//came straight home and went to bed
///now that my Surly is fixed, I won't have to go for a drive when I can't sleep
