Are those sites really competing all that much? Twitter is more for following what things are happening on the web right now, but it is incredibly ephemeral compared to Facebook. If you aren't watching it right that instant, the tweets are gone and something else is in your feed. Similarly, Instagram is great for photos, but it doesn't completely replace Facebook in terms of functionality,. Even though respondents are saying that a particular service is their FAVORITE, I don't think you can take that as saying they have abandoned the other. Its not like console gaming where you have to make a big investment in one platform or the other. Aside from time and attention, there is zero cost in using multiple social media platforms.
