Elsinore?  They were probably drunk after a tour of the local brewery.  Or brainwashed.

I love the picture. Makes me imagine the cop crossing the street saying 'I am a WILD and SEXY chicken!' and I'm not sure exactly why.

Yea, I get that pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk...  but there's also common sense, courtesy and physics.  Don't frigging walk out when a car is approaching, wait for it to pass and then haul ass across.  I'll bet the chicken suit stopped and danced and shuffled and otherwise drew out the crossing as long as possible to "catch" people who go around him.  And the picture... the crosswalk is two narrow faded white lines?  Hard to make out.  Eh, the city would be better off repainting and updating to a proper crosswalk with buttons and signals instead of chicken suit rentals.

I come to this site for a synapse of the news and for the cynical and funny comments.
Usually I understand the article from the headline, especially having been here long enough, and when I don't, the comments usually discuss the topic to clarity.

This time I had no idea what was going on!
And I had to read the article!!

This is a law (Yielding to pedestrians in a crosswalk), in case you were unaware of it.  Pull your head out and watch what you're doing.

Clear, concise rules go largely ignored. They either "didn't see the sign," or think they have a special case where the rule doesn't apply. Giant chicken suits draw attention.

CVC Says:

Right-of-Way at Crosswalks
21950.  (a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.
(b) This section does not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of using due care for his or her safety. No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
(c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.
(d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.
Amended Sec. 8, Ch. 833, Stats. 2000. Effective January 1, 2001.

I always laugh at the stereotype of female officers as somehow all being lesbians.  People who say that have never worked inside a police department.

2013-10-25 08:14:28 AM
I keep having to point out to people trying to duck tickets that the police are not required to be sporting.   Hanging out around bars looking for drunks at closing time fits into an aspect of good police work we call "shooting fish in a barrel."

Article would have been more entertaining if say..... someone would have shot him then claimed he was some psychotic bastard, dressed up in a farkin` chicken costume, running across the road, right through traffic, to attack him, screaming out, "Brock brock brock, I'm kill ya sucka!!!! I know you been eatin m'eggs!!!"...

NOW THAT WOULD HAVE BE A STORY!

this is stupid. Drivers aren't looking for a huge chicken, they are looking for cars and humans. This is a big reason why motorcycles get hit all the time, Drivers minds are interested in seeing them. Anything that isn't relevant to the task at hand (like a big chicken) is somewhat "filtered out". The eyes will see it fine, but your mind will discard it since it isn't a car or a pedestrian.

To catch distracted drivers and write them some tickets.

The city that I work in has many crosswalks, most of which are on very busy streets and most of which are partially obscured by the vehicles that are parallel-parked along the side of the road (thus making it impossible to see if someone is waiting in the crosswalk). Many pedestrians see the pedestrian walkway and bolt out from between the two vehicles parked on either side of the crosswalk. They then biatch when cars have to swerve or stomp on the brakes to avoid hitting their dumb ass.

And don't get me started on the freakin' bicyclists - the ones who ride against traffic, the ones who ride through stop signs/lights, the ones who ride diagonally across an intersection when the straight lanes have the green.

2013-10-25 09:15:08 AM
Is there any law against intentionally distracting drivers for monetary gain ?

2013-10-25 09:27:23 AM
As someone who just had a charming young lady run a red light while texting just as I was entering the intersection, and who flipped me off when I honked at her, I'm getting a chicken out of this.
