"The 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the states with the highest violent crime rates"

"Tennessee has the infamous number one position on the list for having the worst violent crime rate in the entire nation."

"that put the state's crime rate up 6.8 percent"

"Though many would expect
the larger and more populated states such as New York and California to have the worst crime"

The Examiner misunderstands "rate".

No need for the rate baiting.

Thank you Memphis!

When I first moved there in 1999, was wandering around one day and ended up in Orange Mound.  Got a police escort out of there because white people aren't allowed there and I was about to be killed.

They are really holding a grudge about the whole "whitey killed Martin Luther King there" thing.

And visit historic Beale Street!  And then notice that 1 street away the cops patrol on foot with shotguns to keep the tourists from getting killed.

Still worth it for the barbecue, though.

That's the great thing about Tennessee. East TN gives you the former, while Memphis and Nashville provide the latter. Deliverance AND Boyz N the Hood all in one state.

Check out this massive confirmation bias on the part of the Examiner. It's massive. Visible-from-outer-space massive:

"It is believed that the crime rate in the nation peaked in the 1980s due to crack cocaine usage - and then declined thereafter."

There are correlations between race and crack usage. There are NOT correlations between the overall crime rate and race, or between crime and specific drug usage. In fact, police and prosecutors arrest and convict blacks for crack-related offenses at a far higher rate, and with longer sentences, than whites for cocaine or meth usage.

And often these convictions of blacks are used in circular begging-the-question justifications for racial theories on black crime.

laughin: Delaware?

Yeah every time I go visit my folks there there is a meth lab found or exploding. And not too long ago a bunch of teenagers stuffed a 70something year old woman in her truck and left her there for the weekend while they partied in a hotel room talking about killing her. The cops are a little overwhelmed

I figured Illinois would win with Chicago and East St. Louis.

But of course Memphis has churches that would rather build replicas of the Statue of Liberty or 200 foot tall crosses versus helping people.  I certainly have never been hit up for cash by people outside of stores more anywhere else.

South Carolina is kind of surprising.  I know there are some sketchy areas around Charleston, but generally it doesn't seem that bad there.

As for that decline for reasons unknown... read 'Freakonomics'... it postulates the best reason I have come across for the decline in crime, and it offers evidence as to why their theory is a good one.

Alaska is third because of the rape/sexual assault rate.  It's about double the national average.  The biggest problems are DV cases that get out of hand, and homeless and natives who tend to hit the sauce HARD.  Plus the occasional kids who think they're a G and go around vandalizing cars to look hard.  Don't go looking for trouble here and it won't find you.

Even Los Anchorage isn't THAT terrible.  Just stay out of any neighborhood that ends in "view."  Or Koots on a Saturday night.
