The article kind of hinted, but I wasn't clear - how young were the children in the images?

Benevolent Misanthrope: The article kind of hinted, but I wasn't clear - how young were the children in the images?

No, it said it - "some featuring girls as young as 2".

"Might have something wrong with him" is quite the grand understatement.

"Another person under investigation gave an FBI agent permission to check their e-mail, the statement said."

Federal prosecutors are worried about basing prosecutions on email evidence because they do not want discovery to reach the issue of domestic surveillance.  Even here, where our hapless paedophile has already confessed, they must go out of their way to preempt any suggestion that the investigation might have involved  those kinds of capabilities.  Not suggesting it did in this case, just saying it has become an issue for them.

This guy should be commended for recognizing that something is going on in his head. I'm sick of people with  mental illness being treated like criminals. If your brain is wired a certain way, you cannot help what turns you on, sexually. All you can hope for is a life of resisting your urges. Forever.

Some of those featured girls as young as 2, but Jones told agents that "his own interest was in 6 to 10 year old girls," the complaint states.

I was going to break out the pitchforks but that clears up everything.

On the bright side, he's got kind of a purty face, so maybe he'll find some TLC in jail.

Messed up and disturbing, but hopefully he can get some help as he was caught when (as far as we know) he was just downloading pictures instead of assaulting children. And he acknowledges it's a problem.

Granted, SOMEONE assaulted children to make those images, but it would be a positive if this guy could get hooked up with a psychologist to help him cope instead of going to prison for the rest of his life.

Yup, classic typo every time.  The guy searched for "six two ten" instead of "six to ten", got a bunch of 2 year olds.  Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Why does a pedo being busted give you a problem subby?

2013-10-24 05:49:59 PM
That has to be the worst task for policemen and prosecutors, to build a case against a pedophile by looking at the images the person has. Gotta mess with their minds.

He's in the U.S.  The psychologist would throw him in jail for saying he was doing these things.

I seem to recall we had a Fark thread a while back about someone who was given consecutive sentences, one for each and every image on his computer, effectively assuring life in prison. And I think that was just for downloading, not for sharing. This guy's lucky he's only facing a single count.

He'd probably be better off going to jail for the rest of his life.  I'm don't feel sorry for him, but what kind of life does someone live when they're a registered sex offender?  Who's going to want to employ them or be in a relationship with them?  I would assume that it's a guarantee of a life of menial jobs and social isolation.

Probably because he's 'fessing up and cooperating.  Not a formal plea bargain, but going relatively light in exchange for cooperation.

Get it now, people? THIS is a pedophile. He's interested in pre-pubescent kids, thus the "ped" in "pedophile".

People who are interested in 16-year-olds are ephebophiles, not pedophiles.

It's important you understand the difference, because there's a LOT wrong with a pedophile, but an ephebophile can be understood when you just look at 16-year-olds today.

/I'm neither, but I hate when people misuse words.

The colon conveys the necessary information.  If it was a semicolon or a period we'd be worried about subby.
This is the most positive experience that guy will have involving a colon for several years.  Just let him have it.

So how should we treat them?  Just because they've come to terms with their illness doesn't make them capable of controlling their urges.  Some people just can't be fixed (despite them telling you otherwise).  I'm guessing you're volunteering to house/feed these people?

While I certainly agree with you certain people with mental illness should be treated differently; the only problem is folks with manic depression or schizophrenia generally don't pass on their "illness" to others. Unlike a sexual predator who often was a victim themselves and ends up causing things like depression/suicide in their victims if not causing them to become predators themselves.

a taste for tots is a mental illness? he's just the way nature made him. society finds the behavior repulsive so he's screwed (the old 'if you grow up eating bugs then eating bugs is no biggie'). sadly our prisons are well populated with truly mentally ill folks who should be institutionalized and receiving help. our government doesn't give a damn. tossing this fellow in prison for 'x' years will not change his nature. i wish i had the magic answers that would make a positive difference.

Technically speaking, schizophrenics are less violent than the general population and tend more towards self harm, especially to their genitals.  It's just that when they do violence unto others it tends to be more spectacular and captivating, giving a distorted perception of their predisposition to violence.

Pedophiles should be treated, but until they're better understood, rehabilitation is unlikely and maintaining them in psychiatric facilities indefinitely is the unfortunate only "solution" we have.  However, having people self recognize is where the understanding starts.

I can't recall which documentary it was, but apparently according to a police department for a large city, they use females to view such images and yes, there is a high burnout rate where said female employees request and get reassignment after a certain period.

No I don't mean affected, which is why I didn't say affected. I'm certain the 89 people you listed won't be victimizing anyone.  Unlike the victims of sexual predators who in some cases go on to become the predators causing the "illness" to spread.
