Yes, I'd like to rent this model here, the NSAICU247.   Is that still available?

Aaron's is prevented from using location-tracking technology to obtain information about renters without their knowledge, according to the consent order. The company is also required to destroy all consumer data already obtained through its "deceptive" means.

Whoa FTC, you don't have to be so nasty! *satire*

This is just another case of the Gov getting in bed with Big Renta and screwing the little guys!

You're talking about a rent-to-own place. The only customers they were taking pictures of were crackheads and tweakers and hoodrats with extremely poor impulse control. The kind of people that make the customers on "Hardcore Pawn" look like British royalty by comparison.

The pictures are probably just something they do for fun.

What they do with the information left on hard drives after the computers are returned/repossessed, on the other hand...

I don't think he was saying they don't have rights, he's saying they're not exactly high-quality fap material that the joke asked for.

I wonder if rugbyjock's bukket is accessible. :-D

This company could be destroyed.  They may have to cough up six-to-seven figure settlements for each person whose privacy was invaded, regardless how ugly or cracked-out the victim may have been.  Even if the fine print in that rental agreement said they could access the computer remotely to protect their ownership interest, I don't see how they could risk going to a jury arguing that allowed them to peek into bedrooms.  Only the NSA and local police should be doing that kind of thing.

Yes, yes, I know, better call Saul.

My guess is that the lawyers will get about $8 million and the 'class' will get 3 months free rental when renting for 12 or more months.

Not something that would be handled as a class action.  Each plaintiff was violated in a different way, each has to show emotional harm.

FIFM.  I'm very much pro-Corporate Death Penalty (as long as it's rare) and this sounds like corruption that goes all the way up.

We bought a used laptop outright from them.  I wonder the article says it is called Detective mode and is undetectable by owners/users of the computers.  Any way to find out if it is indeed installed?

Reformat and reinstall windows from a trusted source. The designerware webpage looks insanely sketchy and they spend most of their time biatching about how the federal government tracks people but it's illegal for designerware to do the same.

Boot it from a linux live CD and look for the offending software's signature within the HDD's book sector, if any of that sounded like gibberish to you:  pay someone else to do it.

Seconded. Always reformat a used computer.

Thanks guys.  I never thought about reformatting.  My assumption with the whole  tech stuff since I started using computers years ago was basically this:

Software designers: "we have developed this perfect program that does (insert x here)
some other smart techy person: Here is a program that is a work around for the original program.
