Right, because when you want to try to cheat without being noticed you use a bright green substance on the part of the glove that would be seen most easily.

If you can't trust the word of a minor league pitcher from the opposing team then who can you trust?

Wait, hold on. There appears to be something to it. The Cardinals GM just weighed in on the issue!

"As far as I'm concerned it's a non-issue," Mozeliak said. "It's something that arose in social media and not from our players or manager or our coaching staff. To me it does not represent a concern."

That is some damning stuff right there.

The Patriots cheated during the World Series?

2013-10-24 03:56:38 PM
It's actually pretty clear there was something on the glove and it's pretty odd,in context, to lightly touch that same part of the glove with your "main" two fingers of your throwing hand.  This link has a better pic of the 'goo'  http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/10/24/a-cardinals-minor-league r -wonders-if-jon-lester-was-doctoring-up-the-ball-last-night/

Either way, it was more the Cardinals choking than anything.

It's most likely a mixture of Bullfrog sunscreen and rosin, which allows for a better grip on the ball.  There was a minor kerfuffle earlier in the year when Clay Buchholz had it on his arm during a game at Tampa Bay (indoors).  Several Cardinal pitchers have also made mention in the past of using a similar mixture.  MLB and opposing teams don't really mind this at all because A) unlike other foreign substances like vaseline this doesn't confer any unnatural spin or movement to the ball, and B) Improved grip means no hitters getting hit in their ribs because the pitcher's hand is too sweaty.

The minor league player who touched this all off with his video has taken down the post, basically because St. Louis higher ups told him to STFU.  So it's a complete non-story, further enforced by the fact that CNN has a big old box on the homepage featuring the story complete with trolly headlines.

The umpires and Cardinals staff didn't see anything worth reporting, but we should take the word of some dude watching it on TV?

I'll be interested when they figure out who put Vaseline on Kozma's glove though.

James!: The umpires and Cardinals staff didn't see anything worth reporting

The Cardinals would be the very last to scream about it. They gain nothing by looking like sore losers. As for the umps, I'll be curious to see if they check his glove next time he pitches.

Arkanaut: The Patriots cheated during the World Series?

No, you're mistaken. The Red Sox just took one of their pages (Betty? Ellen?) and are cheating during the World Series. It's two separate events. Unlike (for example) taking a page from their playbook (the playbook that for some reason outlines off the field ways to cheat and calls them "plays") and using the "do not follow rules" play to give them a competitive edge.

So you're saying the lack of evidence is evidence itself?

Jesus Christ I was really hoping this story would never make the main page...and I'm a Cardinals fan.

I'm saying that gif of him wiping his two fingers on that spot on his glove is suspicious. I can show you Fark threads where people went crazy defending Lance Armstrong and attacking his detractors and going on and on about how the guy never failed one drug test. And then when he admitted it, everyone suddenly is like, "Duh, it was obvious."

Yeah, I'm disappointed in the Cards losing too but I think this is a stretch.

Next thing you know they'll be saying the Red Sox intentionally lowered the walls around the bullpen so that opposing teams right and center fielders would bruise ribs when they crashed into them..

Shrugging Atlas: Jesus Christ I was really hoping this story would never make the main page...and I'm a Cardinals fan.

Yeah. After giving up 5 in the first 2 innings and then piling on error after error and losing Beltran (why don't other teams train to go back first into that wall???? I will never understand it) I am starting to feel like I need to start rooting for the Cardinals. I'm from Boston but I hate watching games that lopsided.

I miss Fenway.

Yeah - It's a unsubstantiated cheating allegation. Lance dealt with that for years.

Man, if you think a dab of vaseline in the glove is a new pitching trick, you don't know baseball history very well.

Plenty of Lance's contemporaries and rivals were more than happy to cry foul in the media and try to let the world know that Lance was cheating.  But they were effite Euros for the most part so us being the jingoistic people that we are, we rallied around him despite mounting circumstantial evidence from people who frankly were a lot more in the know than us.

Here we have the group who stands to lose the most from this alleged cheating, Cardinals players and executives, basically across the board saying we don't care because we don't think anything wrong went down.  That Lester could wipe his finger on hid glove for nearly eight innings without any sort of in-game reproach by officials or the other team tells you all you need to know about how big a deal this is.

2013-10-24 04:38:51 PM
Mayor Menino should be investigated for cheating by both MLB and NHL officials. He said the Red Sox are going to bring home the World Series Cup.

Hey now, according to Fark physiology experts, a player gaining a shiatload of mass suddenly does not mean steroids! After all, pro athletes don't follow the laws of physiology everyone else on Earth does and can easily gain 5 lb of muscle mass a month.

I know it's not.  But we've got a team dropping balls like it's their first day at clown college and some minor league pitcher accusing the opposing team of cheating.  And your response to that is "Shoot the messenger" as though the dude should be taken as gospel while everyone else actually involved thinks it's nothing.

You're asking me to consider the source and the source is someone who knows pitching. But I'm saying forget the source - watch the footage. And the guy clearly dabs his fingers on that spot on his glove. It's suspicious. Nothing more. Like, McGwire's Popeye forearms were suspicious and nothing more until more was found.

Suspicious enough that no one on the Cardinals including the coach gives a damn.

You know, the ones who lost. You're allowed to use aids to increase your grip on the ball, it's what the rosin bag is there for. In super cold weather like you get in Boston they probably have an understanding that may not be enough and a pitcher might need to get something a bit stronger. If it's anything that's all it is. Is it strictly against the rules? Yes. Does it still follow the spirit of the rules? Yes.

MugzyBrown: Either way, it was more the Cardinals choking than anything.

They didn't choke; they just lost.  It happens sometimes.

Not everything is a choke.  Calling it a choke also takes away from Boston's win.  It becomes "oh, they didn't really win, the opponent just choked."

Ugh. This. And not for any dirt-related incident, unless "dirt" is a reference to the quality of his pitching.
