Want better mental healthcare? Mandate higher insurance payouts per session to therapists

We could start with opening more mental hospitals and having serious fireside chats about mental illness and the issues brought by social stigma of it. And bring Michelle in to explain it while you're at it. If we're going to get anywhere, it's changing the social environment and its perspectives of mental illness.

You know, sometimes it seems like we haven't progressed much since the time when people thought a fun day with the family was going to see the funny people in the insane asylum.

I used to poke fun at Biden (actually, I still do) but his speech before families who lost loved ones in Iraq/Afghanistan on Memorial day 2012 was just phenomenal. This is a guy who gets it.

CPennypacker: Want better mental healthcare? Mandate higher insurance payouts per session to therapists that it is no longer necessary to provide a diagnosis code and treatment plan to the insurance company after the first visit.

Which is why most people get slapped with an "easy" diagnosis, lots of times. It's like telling a mechanic, "You've got 45 minutes to figure out everything that's wrong with this car, and you can take as long as you need to fix it, but you only get to fix the one problem you identified and you can't later determine that it's something else." Some of the most frequent complaints about mental health care today, is that people feel "pigeonholed" and "labeled" after going to the doc - because that's how the insurance companies make them do it.

The most brilliant mental health professionals I've met DON'T take insurance. Because they're unwilling to compromise proper treatment for the insurance companies' financial bullshiat.

Yup. And low and most middle income people get funneled into the clinics that have quotas and treat their therapists like sweatshop workers.

Take insurance gets you more potential clients, but when your schedule is full anyway it doesn't matter. Insurance also gets you way less money per session and a paperwork headache.

If we dont have a gun problem but we do have a mental health problem like republicans love to claim, then they would have no problem with the first thing.  If they are unwilling, then ban guns.

But then we'd have to admit that building missile silos instead of asylums in the 80s might NOT have been the best idea, and then the subject of "cut a couple of billion from defense spending, you lose  basically nothing because there's less bloat, but everyone brands you a terrorist sympathizer" and on and on it goes. And trust me, as someone in the state that got hit the hardest by those cuts, I wish it weren't so.

They should just make Biden permanent VP or some type of ceremonial title that makes him always around keeping things real.

Can they fix the patient privacy bs as well? It sucks having your spouse commited and than not knowing where they are for several days because you don't have a patient code as per hipa.

A lot of mentally ill people have no insight to their illness and they need others to be able to step in and force them into compliance. With current laws this is near impossible unless they are a threat to themselves or possibly others.

I've said it before: I thought about that, and then I realized it would be too much like the royal family in Britain.

And then I thought about that a bit longer, and realized I'm totally OK with having Joe and Dr. Jill as America's Royal Family.

Those people have insurance and can afford the best mental health treatment. The telling thing is that they have not taken advantage of that.

Fine. Ban guns. Then anyone with any kind or disorder is automatically told to man up and deal with it. No healthcare dollars for mental "illness" at all.

Of course, I don't believe that and my statement is retarded. But since your two thoughts had nothing to do with each other I figured mine shouldn't either.

We will be able to afford single payer health care easier than this.  So many crazy people in need of in-patient treatment that we would lose most of our productivity and Republicans.

The Madd Mann, that's exactly how I feel when I click through the TV stations and see how many are making easy coin exploiting people on fake reality shows. And the Law & Order franchise writers seem to rarely let a week slip by without featuring a mentally ill person running amuck and laying people to waste on the streets and shops of Manhattan. So much for the statistics showing most mentally ill people never engage in such activity - they only give a damn about rating share.

The harmless folks never make the news or are very interesting only to the professional therapist.  How many times in an NFL game do you hear about offensive lineman when a penalty isn't involved?

Mandating health insurance actually cover mental health care would be an even better start.  That was one thing the ACA dodged completely.

Fire all the therapists, ban all the legal crack (prescription drugs), and record everything every politician says. And make them pay for their own heathcare.
