Holy shiat those guys look farking badass.

I don't know who the guy on the left is but I'm sure he's hardcore. And Lars is looking at us like "If you even think of traveling to the 1990s and using Napster, you are going to get FARKED UP! BIATCH!". Hetfield is deep in thought about what color to have the contractor paint the wife's new sewing room and Kirk Hammet, who kept his hair long because he's still a bad ass motherfarker is looking away from the camera because he just doesn't give a fark. Because he's metal.

METAL!

All that I see
Absolute cuteness
I cannot swim, I cannot fly
Trapped in the ice
Of an Antarctic shelf!

CSB:

I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago for business (shut up, it really was a business trip) and my colleague and I saw a huge gathering of Metallica fans lined up outside a theater near our hotel.  Turns out they were in town to host a viewing of their 3D concert/tour movie.  James Hadfield owns a pub just down the street that was packed as well.

Metallica and Paris just don't seem to go together in my mind, but there are obviously French fans out there.

It's my fondest hope and wish that Time Travel will one day be possible.  My entire career path is designed to accumulate as much wealth as I can in preparation for commercial use of Time Travel.

At which time, I will bankrupt my future self in order to purchase the right to travel back to 1983 and gather up Metallica and bring them to 2013 so that I can watch young Metallica kick the everloving shiat out of the old and tired Metallica of 2013.

And then I will die peacefully with a smile on my face.

Serious question.

Were these guys ever cool?

Looking back, there really isn't much difference between them and Nickleback.

Dethklok played in freezing extremes first.

Such a solid band and so entertaining. Dethklok I mean. Metallica is dildos

Sure. They brought thrash metal into the mainstream. Then they stopped playing thrash and, consequentially, stopped being cool.

Eh, very much so.

At a time when hard rock or metal bands had to hit the hair spray to get any airplay they kind of walked in and did what they did night after night in whole defiance, and did it waaaaaaay longer than anyone expected them to.  When heavy metal was gimmicky and willing to compromise they weren't.  There were no "stage clothes" or compromising or mellowing....they were nearly unstoppable and paved the way for heavy music to be acceptable to the public in a way that, at best, Sabbath had only come close to previously.

In a sense it was a simpler time.  But it was a point where if you had a leather jacket with the cover for "Master Of Puppets' painted on the back of it, that meant something.

The dude on the left is Robert Trujillo, probably the most talented of the bunch. In addition to playing with Metallica, he has played with Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Mass Mental, Black Label Society, Ozzy, and Jerry Cantrell.

They bought him in right before St. Anger was released, but instead of delaying the release to have him play bass, they got producer Bob Rock to play.  Judging from the crap album it was,  it was another one of Metallica's post-1991 junk

Looking back, "Kill 'em All" was nothing like Nickleback. All the way to "Master of Puppets" was cool.

"Some Kind of Monster" solidified their reputation as whiny soft douchebags forever though.

It would take alot more than great bass to make that album "good."

Not really a fair assessment. Bob Rock's craptacular production is what really hurt St. Anger. It brought a raft of issues, including one I described in another Fark thread as "Lars and his musical bukket".

Seriously, his drums sounded like those 5-gallon plastic buckets.

My point was that they rushed it out.  James was in rehab prior to it, it was just a 'let's make this the laziest metal album ever".  Even the CD packaging was cheap and crappy.

And Justice for All could have been so much better if they had done the mix right...

And justice for Jason isn't perfect, mix wise, but it's far, far better.

On the one hand, i like this. If they play Antarctica they will be more able to ensure their show isn't pirated, and people will be more willing to pay stupid prices for t-shirts just to keep warm. Meanwhile the rest of the world can pretend they've farked off forever.

On the other hand, you can bet they've built a secret lab where they're harnessing Doctor Manhattan's power to destroy New York. Cos they're coonts.
