When my daughter was born, a friend gave me a Magic card he made. Her picture was on it, she was a 0/1 creature, and no other creatures could attack while she was on the table.

So is subby under the impression that by adding video games to Magic The Gathering that it would be made more geeky?

Magic is one step above pencil and paper RPGs on the geeky scale, video games would only push it towards being less geeky.  You'd have to LARP Magic The Gathering to make it more geeky.

We're really overdue for another Un- set, so maybe they might reach out and make some celebrity cameos/references in it.

That being said, the products of any given "create-a-card" forum thread is a really low bar for newsworthiness.

Hell, we'd do better to discuss the fact that MTG has increased profits 30% over last year, which is pretty huge.

I just picked up MTG after a 7 year hiatus.  Did it because I moved to a town and knew no-one, figured I could meet a few friendly geeks at Friday Night Magic.  Needless to say, I got my social time in, but learned that the game is just as fun/challenging as I remember when I was a teenager (I am pushing 30 now, ugh)  So, still a fun game, but it can be a damn money sink when it wants too.  Just gotta control the gambling itch....

2013-10-24 04:36:46 PM
In this age of the microtransaction, I can't believe there isn't a decent P2P MTG game.  Not that I'm thrilled by the prospect of shelling out cash for virtual cards, I just can't believe that if I want to play a quick game without pulling the cards out of storage my only options are the old Microprose game (which I still fire up from time to time), or the terrible XBL games that give you all the fun of Magic without the customization...which was kinda the whole point...

I just try to avoid these threads, and the subject of Magic entirely, because anyone who (like myself) played back in '93-'94 remembers some tragic trades going on then.

Why, sure, I'll trade you some Moxen for that Force of Nature and Lord of the Pit.  Jesus Christ.

Well there is Magic Online, but it isn't decent at all, it's actually a huge steaming pile, it's actually easier to watch streaming of other people playing than having to deal with the interface yourself.

I love, love, love INWO and got the One With Everything set but, man, that game had the steepest learning curve I've ever seen. It was clear that Jackson didn't really get how CCGs worked when he designed it.

The bottom line is that it was fun to play if you could train up a group to play it, but it was an extremely hard sell to most players and difficult to arrange for pick up games at things like cons. The virtue of MtG is that it's very easy to learn, especially if you just start by introducing people to Commons, but it has enough depth to keep people playing it over time.

You do realize that Illuminati is older than CCG's, right? NWO just gave it a new spin by making it "collectable".

Yes, thank you, I do, in fact, know that Illuminati is older, but that INWO is not. And since INWO was pitched as a true CCG, with new sets of mechanics to embrace that concept (such as the elimination of money and dice), I think that it's fair to judge it in comparison to other CCGs.

It was an early attempt by SJG to get into that market and it was a bit of a clunker, on those strict terms. I want to be clear: I still love the game, warts and all, and just wish that it were easier to find people to play with, but, as a CCG, it had some serious flaws and, as a marketing concept, even deeper ones.

INWO, sadly, was neither really here nor there and it ended up competing both with other CCGs (for that market) and against classic Illuminati (whose players were loath to switch to something they viewed as an inferior knockoff), so there was never really much of a player base to support it. I'm actually surprised that they kept it going as long as they did.

/ And yes, I also realize that it's still being sold. But it's been ages since there has been an expansion, so it's pretty clear that it's one of their legacy products.

I was really into Magic from about late '94 until early '97.  Then I discovered Legend of the Five Rings. More balanced, and playing in tournaments gave you a chance to impact the storyline.  I even made some good friends at Nationals and the World Championships.

I will also never forget watching John Wick attempt to pole dance in the Safe House after about eight Spy's Demises.  I don't think that lamp post ever got fixed.

Back when I played (was a hardcore tourny player. one of my friends won it all), I started to play group ages. People farking hated me. Had a deck called Dancing Wurms, 4 of Mr. Nevin's Disks, 4 Pernicious Deeds. I made things go boom often, wiped the table. Of course, I was running Corpse Dance, 4 Pnumbre Wurms and 4 Goblin Catapults so I wanted them to die. Nothing like hitting someone with a 6/6 trample, sacrificing it for another point of damage, and getting a 6/6 trample token.

Does anyone realize that Magic is, right now, one of Hasbro's top selling brands? It's right up there with My Little Pony, and doesn't give you the stigma of sharing a fan base with 12-year-old girls.

Feel free to use it. Add the image to like a Word document, change the size to 3.49" x 2.5" and print, and you can affix it to a crap common or whatever... I wouldn't play with it in a tourney, but a casual format should be alright.

Heh... from the wording... the only thing that can happen is only RD can attack on the turn it's played, and opponents can only attack until your next turn... basically a huge stun on the field
