(The Daily Show)   The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi interviews a surprisingly candid North Carolina republican precinct chairman & GOP committee member on the state's new voter ID law. How candid? "You know that we can hear you, right?"   (thedailyshow.com) divider line 82

I'm never allowed to watch these from England, can anyone give me the gist of what was said?

Slaxl: I'm never allowed to watch these from England, can anyone give me the gist of what was said?

It's like he knew his friends were playing "closeted racist comment" bingo, and he wanted them all to win.

I'm not racist, one of my best friends is black -- check.
lazy blacks -- check
they call each other n****rs and it's fine -- check
When I was a kid we didn't call black people blacks, we called them Negroes -- check
I wasn't criticizing Obama's black half, I was criticizing his white half -- okay, that's not on the bingo card, but WTF?

But don't you dare call them racist.

He also basically admitted that voter ID laws weren't meant to specifically target minorities, just Democrats like college kids and minorities.

"You know we can hear you" was in response to the chairman saying "...and now, we have a black person using the term 'n*gger this, n*gger that', and it's OK for them to do it.."

Gist of the piece,
Republicans:  restrictive voting laws prevent the very real problem of voter fraud
Reality: lol
Democrats: laws are racist because they're designed to hurt blacks
Republicans: laws are not racist because they're designed to hurt Democrats, not blacks, by deterring poor and lazy blacks from voting

Pretty much same argument as always, but with comedic timing.

Why, why, WHY the *fark* is the best team of journalists in this country working for a comedy station on basic cable?!

Because anyone attempting to take the reality of current politics seriously has to be deranged themselves to pretend the participants are sane.

They're the only ones not infatuated with suckling up to the power teat. Seems like the vast majority of "journalists" are also more interested in being pseudo-celebrities as well

Here's Don Yelton's Facebook page.  To say it's written at about a third grade level is an insult to third graders.

https://www.facebook.com/don.yelton1

He frequently posts about "Obamma [sic]" and "the blacks."  I had no idea what he was referring to when he wrote about a "race tract" until I realized he was trying to write "race track."

I'm gonna chalk that one up to the Daily Show video editors splicing the sound so they can let the audience have a moment to think "oh crap, is he really gonna say it?"

2013-10-24 01:23:00 PM
How can these people blatantly state they are anti democracy and get away with it?

2013-10-24 01:28:39 PM
So I looked into Buncombe County, which is where this guy is from, turns out this county has a very interesting contribution to the English language (from Wikipedia):

In 1820, a U.S. Congressman, whose district included Buncombe County, unintentionally contributed a word to the English language. In the Sixteenth Congress, after lengthy debate on the Missouri Compromise, members of the House called for an immediate vote on that important question. Instead, Felix Walker rose to address his colleagues, insisting that his constituents expected him to make a speech "for Buncombe." It was later remarked that Walker's untimely and irrelevant oration was not just for Buncombe-it "was Buncombe." Thus, buncombe, afterwards spelled bunkum and then shortened to bunk, became a term for empty, nonsensical talk.

This, in turn, is the etymology of the verb debunk.

(For the record, the Missouri Compromise was about the regulation of slavery. I bet I could guess what side Felix Walker was on.)

Yeah but when Mandvi asked him about being a racist (granted there was a cutshot)....he sat there a second thinking about it.

Then again, this guy is not exactly a rocket scientist.

I'm okay with this nonsense, as long as anyone who couldn't vote due to dumb reasons like this has immunity to the state's laws regarding shooting republican voters(since participation in the system is apparently voluntary).

2013-10-24 02:31:06 PM
I think my favorite moment was the instant the interview went off the rails.

So this law isn't Racist?

Instant answer  "Absolutely Not!"

And you aren't racist?

long pause..."I've been called a bigot before"

2013-10-24 02:44:36 PM
Well he was candid, I'll give him that.  I found myself less irritated with him than other republicans who are less forthcoming on these matters.  Thankfully his demographic is dying out so there is that.

Wrong. All racists are bigots but not all bigots are racist.

That being said, I couldn't believe that the guy being interviewed was that stupid. ... and racist.

Here's what you do
Get Firefox
Get the 'Modify Headers' add-on
Add a line, and make the following entries
Add
x-forwarded-for (should autocomplete)
12.13.14.15

then save it. Restart firefox and you can watch The Daily Show, South Park, Simpsons, and a crapload of other US-Only TV shows

I feel like since he was rather open that this was about hurting the Democrats that anything to do with these laws should be kicked up to the Supreme Court, if necessary, along with the full footage (unedited even) from "The Daily Show."

One party enacting laws to stop another party from voting should be something we're all against.  Sure, it may benefit your "side" right now, but who is to say it won't be used against your "side" at a later date?

Wow:

"Lets cut federal funding to any state that does not make abortion clinics meet the same standards of a hospital. Also since most murders are Black on Black let cut federal funding to any state that does not make it illegal for a black to own a gun. then we would not need stand your ground over 70 plus percent of the time. Abortion is okay but stand your ground is not. What a progressive idiot. "

I'm sorry N.C., but our state is littered with people like this men.  I wish we could just wait for them to die off, but the problem is, they are passing their bigotry, racism and ignorance on to their kids and grandkids.  And despite the obesity, drinking and cigarettes, these guys are living longer than ever.  They are heroes in their communities.  It's going to take a good long time to go away, if ever.

That being said, I don't believe this is all about racism.  This is about unfairly skewing elections.  This is about winning at any cost, knowing that the majority of people do not agree with you or your politics.  I know racists and bigots are behind it.  Guess what?  They're homophobes, too, sometimes violently so, but I don't for a second think this is about homophobia, either.

2013-10-24 06:35:35 PM
I love how republicans do exactly what they accuse others of doing.
