Ann Coulter is Andy Kaufman in drag.

Headline is a pretty good encapsulation.

I think she really believes her horsehit. Then again, I suck at spotting trolls on here so what do I know.

Stephen Colbert is a liberal who plays a loudmouthed conservative.  A right-wing version of Stephen Colbert would be a conservative playing an outspoken liberal like... uh... we have those? Rachel Maddow maybe?... not a conservative playing a lunatic asylum inmate.

2013-10-24 09:25:53 AM
The only reason we do not kill Ann Coulter is because of a blanket prohibition on killing people, not because Ann Coulter herself actually deserves to be alive.

Liberals look at those two and are amused.  Conservatives look at them and are aroused.

2013-10-24 09:35:45 AM
There are a whole bunch of "conservative" pundits who jumped on that cash cow in the 2000s. There's a lot more money to be made in the derposphere than actual journalism.

2013-10-24 09:38:55 AM
Her book titles have gotten really tired and uninspired.  She's failed to keep her schtick fresh.  I expect her next title to be "Liberals suck and are doody-heads."

It used to be televangelism.  I wish it still was...

Anyway, I remember watching the transformation in the late 90s and early 2000s.  There used to be level-headed conservative commentators.  Some of them went the derp route, others just went away.  I'll never forget watching Heather Nauart as the conservative support commentator on an episode of Hannity and Colmes.  She was quite smart and articulate (and hot as hell) and when Hannity would ask questions that were unnecessarily over the top, she would kind of laugh as if he were making a joke and then try to bring the conversation back into the realm of intelligent discussion/debate.  I think they needed a pretty girl to help sell their message and didn't expect her actually have brains.  She was on Bill Maher a time or two if I remember correctly.

Satire would indicate that she actually wanted to improve or at least point out inconsistencies or weaknesses in the system. She doesn't exactly do that. She fires folks up, certainly. She goes for bombast, and hyperbole, but it isn't so much in the vein of pointing anything worthy out, but rather, is the journalistic equivalent of truck nuts. She's bigger, meaner, MOAR than anyone else, and she's certainly smart enough to be aware of the lies, damn lies, and outright over the topness, but she is playing the role of an uber-Conservative, to an uber-Conservative audience. That isn't quite the same as what Colbert does, not in the least.

Do people get that what she is doing? Not a lot. She is essentially playing a role, and she's paid fair well for it, but she isn't exactly going to fill Phyllis Schafely's shoes any time soon--not with Sarah Palin angling for that role of symbolic Mama to a movement--and while I can agree that she doesn't believe a quarter of the tripe that she spews, all it does is muddy the waters. It's not brilliant, it's not satire, it's damn near parody, but in the end, it's just opportunistic sniping from a safe vantage, and essentially she's the journalistic version of camper hiding behind a wall of "safe" media houses, and only really revealing herself to open criticism when she chooses to make a face at folks. The problem is, that she's not filling a role of commentary to expose the contradictions of the Left, but rather, simply gratifying those who have an unending hatred of folks whose opinions differ from their own. She's making a good living keeping folks riled, but it's not satire, and the folks she is really taking advantage of are the Right, who keep paying her to spout fantasy. She is the intellectual equivalent to a phone sex worker, cooing into the ears of millions with the stuff they want to hear...

Ann Coulter / Al Franken. If you could be any historical figure, who would you be and why?

I would be Ann Coulter's husband because I always wanted to know what it would be like to have sex with a bag of antlers.

I'd be Ann Coulter's gender reassignment surgeon because I have to assume whoever cut off this guy's pecker is pretty successful & well off.

Understanding methods of communication leads to honest debate.  Honest debate leads to compromise.  Compromise leads to functioning government.  Can't have functioning government.

I don't.  I've always maintained any of the big name pundits just fell into where they were, started making money with it, and ran with it, acting kookier and kookier.

Take any Bill Maher, Mann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Hammity, et al, and had things gone differently one day and they were hired by someone else, any one of them could be doing the opposite (politically speaking) just as well.

Rush Limbaugh could absolutely be a huge left wing commentator right now.  He could play the exact same bravado bullshiat from that direction just as easy.  And theoretically speaking?  Any of these pundits could easily switch sides if they wanted to, if the wind blew that way...start calling themselves reformed, they saw the light, some major event changed their life, etcetera.

Coulter is a shrill, abusive demagogue. Colbert just plays one on TV.

If she really is just a parody, she's one sociopathic squnt to be able to keep it going so long.

There will be no "right wing" version of Colbert.  There's no money in pretending to be a loudmouthed Democrat.  There aren't left-wing rubes lining up around the block waiting to hear what they should believe from one source.

If there were, Olbermann wouldn't be back on ESPN right now, and the leading "liberal" programming wouldn't take place on a network that used to have fighting robots as a lead-in to their "news" programs.

2013-10-24 11:15:31 AM
Satire is presenting things in a ridiculous way so as to make some other point. Coulter just finds inflammatory ways to say right wing talking points. She's not commenting on them or leading listeners to some other conclusion. She's a simple propagandist.

Naw, she's been in it for the money since day one when she was pushing the Lewinsky scandal to the Liebrul MSM

I've always thought Coulter was more like Andrew Dice Clay. She was never witty or intelligent but was willing to say whatever outrageous shait was necessary to get attention. The problem is that her shtick has been copied so much that it's the norm for conservative pundits and talk radio hosts. It's not terrifying or shocking, it's farking boring.

Yes, because the old axiom is still true, stupid people are easily parted with their money.

I always thought Colbert was a send-up Bill O'Reilly.  Stewart is hip to this, and seems to joke openly with Bill about how ridiculous his act and shameless book pimping is (at least when Bill is on his show).  Colbert seems to openly hate Bill.

Coulter is assuredly an act, but there is no sense of humor or parody in it.  It is just straight up evil.

Ed Schultz already does this and it never caught on with most liberals - at least according to his ratings.

She did an AMA on Reddit the other day.  She was as big of a coont there as she is in her books and columns.
