Unfortunately, I am not privy to the Ms. Jackson meme so no, I don't get it.

However, I will tell you that I have had several pets from birth to death and never took any to the pound/gave away etc. because of some stupid sh*t thing like getting married/moving/having a baby/getting tired of the pet/particular breed 'going out of style' etc.  So yeah, forever ever, barring sudden death and that is entirely beyond my control.

I am just sick of people considering animals disposable as soon as they tire of it.

They were spotted on the tracks so the subway was shut down until they could be removed safely. NY mayoral candidates were asked about it and some said that they wouldn't have shut down the subway just for a couple of kittens but de Blasio said he agreed with the decision

There are shelters, foster home, and other temporary housing.  Forever home is just a quick identifier that it's a permanent adoption versus a temporary one.

it does encourage people to think of adoptions at shelters as permanent.  there are way too many people who "return" animals for dumbass reasons.
my three adopted cats are all from homes where people decided they didn't want cats anymore.  one after ELEVEN YEARS of having her (because of a baby), one after eight years (because they were moving), and one after three years (because they just didn't want her, even though she's adorable and playful and awesome).

It's cool, I get you.  It's not the sentiment, it's the saccharine coating that sort of squeaks on the teeth.  I get like that about the rainbow bridge.  Permanently stuck somewhere between having my heartstrings tugged on and privately going 'oh, barf,' even though I still cry once in a while about my best cat that I lost a decade ago.  I'll never rag on the concept, I really do get it and it's terrific and lovely for a lot of people.  It's just a bit much for me personally.

it IS from a band who has enjoyed top 40 success, but many of their songs are NOT top 40, nor are those songs even top 40 friendly.

I know a person who had a dog for four years and gave him back to the shelter because he wasn't house trained.

This is the same person who never once walked that dog, believing that letting it out into the backyard was good enough.

And this is the same person who a month later adopted two new dogs.

Argh!

bungle_jr: Lumbar Puncture: bungle_jr: i am an animal lover and a pet owner (2 turtles and a dog). i believe in giving homes to pets in need. however, i HATE the term "forever home". not certain why...it just grates on my nerves. it's like saying "home" isn't good enough...but seriously, you can promise "forever"?

There are shelters, foster home, and other temporary housing.  Forever home is just a quick identifier that it's a permanent adoption versus a temporary one.

yeah i get what it means. just phrases like "forever home" sound very silly to me. perhaps i'm alone in this. and that's ok...and normal...i have strange thoughts, quirks, irritants, etc.

I agree, it's silly. It's an attempt IMHO to attach more tug-on-your-heartstring-iness to adopting a pet.

Our cats are our forever. Seriously, we would never give them up. Perhaps our lives are just too stable but it would never happen.

dotvincent: I know a person who had a dog for four years and gave him back to the shelter because he wasn't house trained.

This is the same person who never once walked that dog, believing that letting it out into the backyard was good enough.

And this is the same person who a month later adopted two new dogs.

Argh!

At least he took him back to the shelter. I had neighbors in my apartment building who got two kittens and a dog and just decided to leave them in the apartment when they moved to another place that didn't allow animals.

dragonchild: Barfmaker: Loosen the collar he's not a frickin' bobblehead.

This, holy fark.  That cat might be better off living under the subway.  At least there'd be plenty of mice to eat, and death by electrocution sure beats a slowly crushed neck.

NO. Subway cats don't live very long. And they have fleas and shiat. And breed more subway kitties, whose lives will also suck.

The humans will loosen the cat's collar and the cat(s) will be happy, spoiled, and long lived.

I was reading a thread on...another site, and the guy was trying to find a new home for his cat. Great, at least he wasn't just abandoning it. He'd adopted the cat earlier this year, but now he was looking to move in with his new boyfriend, that just happened to be severely allergic to cats.

I can't fathom giving up my cats in any instance, but reading that made me want to punch things.

Contents Under Pressure: The mistake was having large and loud (I used to live there) transit workers stomping around yelling, "HERE F*CKING KITTY KITTY!"

You got a problem with guys chasin' tail in the subway?

bungle_jr: as i poorly attempted to explain, it's not the idea of "forever home", it's the term that grinds my gears. certain phrases/terms just irritate me. again, i'm likely alone in this, and i understand.

I get it, and cutesy terms for stuff run me the wrong way as well, but I don't mind this one because I'm not sure I can think of a shorter term to convey the same idea without it sounding a little silly.  Permanent home would work as well but that sounds a bit rough.

I love the idea of a "forever home". It is a little silly but it's a good and pleasant thought.

It doesn't mean you're not going to move, it just means you're accepting a permanent relationship. My first rescued cat lived to be 18 and we lived in 7 different homes together. My girlfriend's cat (who became my own as well after 11 years together) lived to be 19.

I have heard all kinds of horror stories of people returning/abandoning animals for completely stupid reasons. I had one real estate agent tell me that one couple had left their dog locked in a closet when they moved.

We rescued two kittens a few months ago and spent a couple hours at the foster agency interviewing. My girlfriend had spent months on PetFinder and various other adoption sites until she found two who we knew were a good fit. When asked "what reason, if any, would you no longer keep the cats in your care?" my girlfriend and I said, in unison, without even looking at each other, "death."

Either ours or theirs. That's what took our first cats, and that's what makes it a forever home.
