Thats actually quite a cool idea, and extends the 'event cinema' concept.

Holy christ yes. And they're FANTASTIC. I go to Lyric once a year and pay $300 to get a decent-ish seat, one where if I'm lucky I can see with my unaided eye a performer's facial expression. When I see the Met telecasts, I can see the stitching on costumes and close-ups of faces. It's a whole other level of enjoyment at a fraction of the cost.

Well Europe does love its opera. I think most of it is pure crap.

Came here to say just about that except with a different link for non-Met operas. They do ballet as well.

I went to the Staatsoper in Berlin a few years ago, located on Unter den Linden right next to the square where Goebbels had the main book burning. The opera was Madama Butterfly, and while I was excited to see it, I was also tired from jet lag (I'd arrived earlier that day; it was either Butterfly or The Ring Cycle). So there I was, falling asleep at the opera, and the show was taking forever to end, and I was thinking to myself, "Butterfly, kill yourself already!"

/still glad I went

The Hook is the height of sophistication compared to some of the other places in the Commonwealth on their theater list: Bristol; Danville; Lynchburg; Staunton. Not to mention four different theaters in Wyoming.

Opera has this distinction of being high art but I don't see it. There's so full of melodrama, which isn't usually associated with sophistication. Take for instance a silly or drunken character will typically be stumbling or flailing his arms very exaggerated for comedic effect- which puts it at about the level of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. When you're trying to communicate with an audience member sitting 50 rows back you pretty much have to make everything big and stupid.

Yea, came here to note that. Most major cities have these set up. Mine has them and I'm in a suburban area.

My biggest problem with opera is that they don't write their own lyrics
