Bravo, subby. As an Austrian, I approve.

Man, that must be making it really hard for people to sleep there.

Haha wow I was watching NBC when they showed this while only half paying attention. I remember casually thinking holy crap that's a ton of wild fires. I didn't realize the ridiculousness until now taking a second look.

Crikey!

AMERICA, the nation which gave the world 307 Nobel laureates, has today shown that its media is about as smart as one of its famously dopey teen beauty pageant contestants.

Oooh, burn!

/see what I did there?

I like castigating media incompetence as much as anyone, but TFA mocks NBC (and America) for suggesting there are fires all over Australia and then goes on to explain that all the locations marked with flames on the NBC map do, in fact, have fires. That's a bit of a stretch.

Why are they being so hostile towards Americans?

Yeah, what did the Armenians ever do to them?

/wtf was that image on the right "Dancers Among Us"?

Are the hills alive with the sound of wildfires?

If you were writing about the three feet of snow that South Dakota got a couple weeks back, would you use a map that showed flurries in Buffalo? Especially if your audience isn't that familiar with the geography of the US?

Just laziness on NBC's part. If you're talking about a specific fire, give information related to that fire, not to every dropped match on the entire continent.

You are so original subby. How did you come up with that?

So NBC mistakenly released a graphic that showed ALL possible data instead of just timely data.  And they aren't even the ones that generate said data.  They just show the thing.  It seems that the only mistake that was made was quality control.  Like, someone should have approved that graphic before it was shown.

But this is live TV.  Everything happens in a heartbeat.  I love it when live news channels mess up.  It cracks me up.  But it doesn't mean they are stupid by a longshot.  In fact, it's almost a miracle how few mistakes are made.

You don't think a graphic showing nearly half of Australia on fire should have atleast raised an eyebrow of someone on the production staff?

2013-10-24 12:15:51 PM
Australia: if all the deadly animals don't kill you, then the fires will.

2013-10-24 12:17:52 PM
In all likelihood, NBC has taken the image from a Geoscience Australia product called Sentinel. Sentinel is a national bushfire monitoring system which uses satellite data to enable emergency service managers and other users to identify fire locations across Australia.
At any given time, the map will show hazard reduction burns, bushfires which pose no threat to life or property, plus of course much more serious bushfires like the ones we've seen this week.

Close enough.

Listen. It's NBC. You expect accuracy from them? Please.

Be careful "Austria", NBC just might set fires around the country themselves to make the map correct.

2013-10-24 12:50:10 PM
Perhaps they are feeding the fire with their Alphorns.

2013-10-24 12:51:36 PM
Hey they did get the right continent. That should be worth a few points.
