I don't usually come into a thread just to shiat on it but before this headline I had a hard time articulating the thing that would mean the least to me in the world. Now in every day conversation I can properly say, "I give less of a fark about that than a Norah Jones / Billy Joe Armstrong album of Everly Brother covers." So thank you, I'll be forever indebted to all involved.

If I had to listen to that, I think I would know why I didn't come.

Norah Jones is phenomenally talented, but she plays with some of the worst musicians I've ever heard.

The Little Willies was straight up awful.

I liked my headline better: "Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones to release album of Everly Brothers covers. You can rearrange the people in this headline all you want, and it still won't make any more sense"

I gotta to fark her again.

Is it because Billie's finally decided to come out and this is his oblique way of telling the world?

/don't really farkin care

Stupid tag? Looks like subby has a case of the "stop liking what I don't like"

That song always reminds me of an ex-girlfriend: I don't know why she didn't come, either.

I checked it out. There is nothing wrong with it.

50's-style harmonizing done nicely with modern production values. If you think you might like something like that, you might very well like this thing.

If you'd rather just be cranky about it, by all means go ahead and be cranky. That probably won't hurt anyone's feelings too much.

That is ... terrible.

Couldn't be as bad as Mike Ness's country/bluegrass cover album.

Of course, that's not saying much.

Nothing could be worse than that turdburger.

oh, just listen to the originals

Norah Jones is one of those people who can musically do no wrong to me. Love her solo stuff, love her turns with The Little Willies, and I have no reason to see why my reaction to this would be any different.

It really isn't bad.

Well, it won't be any less relevant than anything else either of them has ever done.

The Norah Jones songs I've heard have been the strongest cures for insomnia I've ever encountered.  They could use them to shut down angry mobs.

The odd thing is that there was an album of male/female Everly Brothers covers released earlier this year, by Bonnie Prince Billy and Dawn McCarthy. It was pretty good, had a bunch of songs I'd never heard.

I am not releasing an album of Pearl Jam covers, but I did this for some (or no) reason:

Everly Brothers' songs are very good and don't deserve to e forgotten in the mists of time, and Norah Jones is incredibly talented. That said, fark Billy Joe Armstrong.

Here are a few cuts from Ms. Jones side project, The Little Willies, where she covers country standards.

I listened to that; it wasn't bad, it was just boring.

/a frequent problem with Costello albums these days.

What's next, Metallica making an album with Lou Reed?

2013-10-24 09:01:42 AM
Can't remember the name of the project, but Norah Jones did some album with her half-sister (Ravi Shankar's daughter) that apparently pays tribute to their dead father.  Heard some clips on the radio, and knowing that their father's name means "Sun" combined with the lyrics about the "Sun not setting" and all the shiat they went through in their troubled relationship while he was alive...let's just say there was a sudden dust-storm in my car.

Norah Jones has an absolutely beautiful voice, but goddamn is she ever boring.  I had one of her concert DVDs from ages ago and goddamn did it ever put me to sleep.

It reminded me of an album Joe Strummer might have made 15 years ago... if Joe Strummer wasn't as creative as he was.  Which is where is see this new Elvis Costello, kind of a less talented Joe Strummer.

They nailed it, IMO. If I didn't know who it was, I'd swear it was a record from the 1950s. Who knew Billie Joe had a subtle side? And I've always liked Norah a great deal.

Slow & boring are two very different things to me. I can listen to Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left" and revel in every minute of it. On the other hand, cookie-monster metal bores the living Hell out of me, because I don't hear any subtlety in it. It's not that I don't like a fair amount of loud cacophony in my music... I just can't do it all time. So I love Tool, Pere Ubu, Bad Brains & The Pop Group... but I also love Norah, Diana Krall, and chill-out jazz.  (Kenny G and his ilk can EABOD, however.)

Can't stand Green Day, but BJ Armstrong covering the Everly Bros. makes sense to me.

Now that I think about it, the Everly Bros. probably influenced BJ's corny pop vocal sound.  His super jumbo Gibson acoustic model with double pickguards & star inlays is basically a reissue of the Everly Bros's model from 40 or 50 years ago.

You said what I came to say, two out of three usually isn't bad, but BJ would completely ruin it.

Sheryl Crow's cover of "Sweet Child o Mine"?
Pearl Jam's "Last Dance"?
any cover, or original of a Joni Mitchel song?
Celine Dion's cover of "You Shook Me"?

I could go on...but my brain is seizing up from vapour lock of all the SUCK all ready mentioned...

Pfft. Pfft, I say. Elvis might not edit out the filler perfectly all the time, but his records are pretty great and varied.

Celine Dion's cover impressed the hell out of me.

I mean, Pat Boone's metal cover album set the bar pretty low, but Celine Dion was able to slide right under it. That's a feat.

Norah Jones is a loaf of store brand 99-cent white bread.

Not sure why, but I feel like mentioning in this thread the new Mazzy Star album is excellent.

Saw her in concert in June of 2012 it was a snooze fest. I only went because the ticket was free. Although she is cute so that gets her some points.

Punk is about doing something different. Going against the grain. It is funny when Green Day do things that "punk" bands wouldn't consider (like a musical) gets them insulted, when really it is the most punk thing you could do.
