Years ago, someone said that according to the laws of aerodynamics, bumblebees cannot fly. But the bumblebees, not knowing the laws of aerodynamics, go ahead and fly anyway.

Except that bees don't break the laws of aerodynamics, and this has been proven many times over.

It's a rehash of the tired, old whine 'If America is racist and poor people are disadvantaged, why Asian immigrant success why???'

"There have been many ponderous academic writings and dour editorials in the mainstream media lamenting that most people born poor cannot rise in American society anymore. Meanwhile, many poor immigrants arrive here from various parts of Asia, and rise on up the ladder anyway. "

Always best to start your argument with an obvious flaw.

Do you not understand the difference between these words?

Often these Asian immigrants arrive not only with very little money, but also very little knowledge of English. They start out working at low-paid jobs but working so many hours, often at more than one job, that they are able to put a little money aside.

As an Asian immigrant, I want to note that a lot of the most successful Asian immigrants tend to be some of the more elite members of their respective countries - either wealthy enough to immigrate or here for graduate school educations (which tends to push their earnings up). Asian immigrants are often very successful because they were successful in their respective countries of origin. It's a self-selecting population.

And I should also note that the vast majority of Asian immigrants to the US also languish in poverty for most of their lives and never get the leg up that Sowell thinks they will get. These Asian immigrants are invisible to conservatives like Sowell because they don't fit their narrative of race.

2013-10-23 04:23:19 PM
Well hell, as long as we're going to just pull anecdotes out of our assholes:

I had a girlfriend once upon a time whose parents were immigrants from Taiwan. Her dad was a chemical engineer. He already had the brains to do that when he moved here and took his doctorate from Auburn University. Following that, he took a job working for Exxon in Houston. He was quite well off. So yes, he was very upwardly mobile, likely as a result of his not having been born a poor black child, but instead being born in Taiwan and getting an excellent education.

Now, having met the apparent same burden of proof as this jackoff, our arguments collide and annihilate, and now none of us can know anything. Magnificent.

Washington Times? No.

Thomas Sowell? DOUBLE NO!!

Economic knowledge without sociological/cognitive/psychological knowledge = you should be doing taxes at H&R Block. The sad part is that he'll be praised by a lot of people and will never realize question why. He has too much pride to realize he's a token and is philosophizing far above his actual skill level.

Same with Clarence Thomas. Funny thing, he's (by far) the least experienced Justice on the Court.

It's the Affirmative Action hires on the Right that are the ones most in denial.

This.

A few decades ago they  used to basically say the same thing about Cubans vs. other Hispanics. I for one found it shocking that the rich Cubans who had college educations and were kicked out by the poor cubans during a communist revolution seemed to do better economically in U.S. society than the illiterate and semi-literate that migrated from the countrysides of Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Seems like a blanket statement to me. My wife is an Asian immigrant. The youngest of five brothers and one sister. Her family was dirt poor in China. Dad was a teacher (paid I guess less than what we get here). They did work hard in this country. From driving cabs to restaurant/spa businesses. Ironically, her brothers made more money off of real estate back in China after growth took off in her former province.

If anyone can rise up the social ladder then anyone can and all complaints about class are invalid. This is why feudal Japan was perfectly egalitarian since there was at least one daimyo with peasant roots.

Compare the racial stereotypes each group faces. Asian stereotypes are almost all overwhelming positive: smart, industrious, polite etc etc - the only negative stereotypes they encounter are either trivial (can't drive, small winkies) or related to a positive stereotype (e.g. cunning and deceitful because they're very smart).

Wait, wait... wait wait. Are you saying this racist is using cherry-picked psuedo-statistics and vague language/phrasing to present his own conclusions as facts in a blatant example of confirmation bias?  That at no point do the actual groups in discussion actually perform according to his expectations, even if they were an apples to apples comparison (which they aren't)?

Unpossible.

I think Rex is talking about the current wave of immigration, which started after China re-opened relations with the US and grew after the Tiananmen Square incident.  The railroad workers obviously came here for different reasons, and can hardly be called immigrants anymore.

I'm a Chinese immigrant. Trust me, if they were able to come to the US (and I'd imagine that they came earlier than I did, unless your wife is about the same age as me), then they were most definitely not dirt poor in China.

Also, the dad was a teacher -  families where a parent is a teacher tend to put a higher emphasis on education, which tend to do better. If you put a randomly selected uneducated Chinese peasant family in the US, they will be just as destitute as they were in China (only with even fewer social support structures).

It's still going on now. The language has just changed to "abstract" issues like "cutting taxes" because Republicans can't say the N-word anymore.

(Warning, offensive language)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy#Evolution
Questioner: But the fact is, isn't it, that Reagan does get to the Wallace voter and to the racist side of the Wallace voter by doing away with legal services, by cutting down on food stamps?

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, "N*gger, n*gger, n*gger." By 1968 you can't say "n*gger" - that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me - because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N*gger, n*gger."[4]
