While thumbing through the items before the trip, Flynn said, "To be honest, as you get older, there's a point where you realize most of your life is in the past, it's not in the future. That doesn't mean you don't have a future, and it's not that you don't feel positive about it, but still, you know you're never going to live as much of a life again as what you've already lived."

Mind officially blown...

They are actually quite controversial on their home planet.

Actually, I retract my snark. Despite whet the headline says, the story is about the first sale and a documentary, not the old news story of the release.

The Residents? They're like 60 something years old. Can they be hipsters? I didn't even think hipsters liked them.

I like Eskimo, but here they are covering Satisfaction.

I think the only hipster thing about The Residents is that they are probably the band most mentioned followed by "but you've probably never heard of them."

The important question here: is it a working refrigerator?

And how many band members does it contain?

I already bought one...in Constantinople.

Fixed it for 'em.

as I told a friend, if the fridge doesn't have a copy of their "baby sex" reel to reel, there's really no point.

No, they had it right.  Some bands aren't really interested in being hounded by fans and weirdos (often the same people).  ZZ Top are the same way: the show ends, the beards come off, and they can walk out of the venture without anyone noticing them.

Now, given that I'm not a Residents nut, could someone tell me: why a fridge?

I knew a guy 20 years ago who was a hipster before it was cool. He had a Mark of the Mole T-shirt and was all about farking Jandek and shiatty local bands that played for 5 people. He'd get hired to write a column for a weekly, then lose his job after a month cos he only wrote about crap bands who wanted to sound like shiat.

CSB: I saw Jandek in concert a couple years ago.  It was just as bad and just as weird as I would have expected.

Look, they've done what they've wanted, and made the music they wanted to, on their own, for over 40 years. Pretentious? I don't think so, but even, they did it their way, without having to satisfy a label. No slogging through crap a la Albini. That should earn them respect.

/CSB: I just got back from seeing Sparks with Molly Harvey.

Wow, that is hipster-before-was-cool. I had no idea that was possible. I was just hitching a ride with a family friend who had to drop in & do them a favour.

Have been a Residents fan since '80. Saw them in DC on their "Wormwood: Curious Stories From the Bible" tour and it was a great show. More like a living music video than a concert.

They are one of the strangest bands you will ever hear, especially the earlier, more experimental, stuff. They also released two of the funniest albums I've ever heard, The Third Reich 'n Roll, and my favorite, The Commercial Album.

one my my fave bands ever, as the original hipster douchebag....

eskimo and third reich n' roll are exceptional soundwerks.
