To a baby, an Sp404 is just like a lot of their toys- its a box with lots of big colorful buttons and when you hit the buttons, it makes a noise. Different buttons make different noises.

That is really all there is to it, when you are 20 months old.

I was reading a book that sort of required me to do it in a rap style, and my 4 year-old daughter started beat-boxing, so I'm getting a kick out of this thread...

I wonder how much Armin van Buren charges to babysit?

Babies and electronic music might not seem as intuitive a combination

Infants and electronic sounds have a huge history. They like novelty and interesting sounds -- everything is new to them -- and ever since electronic sounds could be generated, there has been a lucrative market in producing them for children, and imbuing them into toys where they could be pressed over and over again (to the annoyance of their parents).

The very first fully electronic songs that came out in the 60s and 70s were almost exclusively geared toward children, and were usually nursery rhymes or circus/carnival themes. Bruce Haack, Dave Richmond, Dave Vorhaus, Heinz Funk, Ted Atking and Alain Feanch as well as the popular Little Thinker series of tapes were some of the more well-worn pioneers of the genre.

It's this kind of ignorance that always pisses me off whenever I read articles about electronic music.

Thanks for sharing that!

Based upon the time frame for that clip (clothing, computer) I think that Herbie must have gone straight from recording this bit on SS, dumped all the sounds into a bucket, shat in said bucket, and then stuck a label on it and called it  Future Shock. God, that was a horrible album.

But thanks for sharing that.

Probably a good thing. DJ's get the hottest girls (or guys) with minimal effort, a mediocre DJ always cleans up, even better than a guy/girl in a band. So start them early on the path to quality ass.

Julian's mom, Samantha, on the other hand, believes Baby DJ School is giving her son something he doesn't get anywhere else. "There are hundreds of music classes for babies, and they're all nursery rhymes and the kids sit around and hit a little drum. This one is more interactive," she says.

Samantha, once your kid starts spinning "Smack my biatch up!" in this class I am sure will be your cue to end his participation in this class... because the song is too mainstream, for your little budding Hipster tike! :-P

By the way the woman "teacher" looks (and the fact that this is the Village Voice reporting it and not the Daily Fail), I have a bad feeling that it is. One thing that is consistent about Hipsters, they will go out of their way to make bad ideas reality. Instead of having your kid learn music by playing with instruments and possibly applying those skills (if the child has further interest) in a career of it one day (maybe even make their own music), as well as expanding the child's subjects of interest and intellect, these "alternative" parents instead decide that their kids should learn something where the basics of it can be picked up in a day's time of observation of a control board! (I know, I'm a DJ myself!)

DJ school is as ridiculous as it sounds.

Musically-speaking, DJs fall somewhere beneath obsessive, poorly-trained bagpipers with asthma and just  slightly  above vuvuzula cover bands.
