Maybe what the Browns need is a wily veteran.. one that has worked magic for the Browns before.

..one that holds the record for the longest pass in a Super Bowl

I never understood how this guy went from pro bowl and running a prolific offense to being awful and a nobody. What happened?

2013-10-23 02:07:40 PM
Garcia is making a public fool of himself now, but I was a big fan of his.  I watched him play great with Calgary in the CFL, and when he went to San Fran I started cheering for the hated 49ers.

He's one posterboy for having the right offense for the right QB in the NFL though.  He was terrible in Cleveland because they didn't run a short-pass, West Coast offense.  He played very well in Tampa when they did.  He filled in great in Philly at the end of his career playing in Andy Reid's offense.

He would be a disaster playing for the Browns today however.

Well, he was never the brightest guy to play the position.  He went into every play with two options if things broke down: heave it up to Randy Moss or run it himself.  Both were wildly successful.  He had the arm to get it to Randy and Randy outrun and outjump just about every d-back in the league.  Daunte was a punishing runner, too, right up until he got hurt running down in the redzone (cracked vertebra IIRC).

When he came back, they wouldn't let him run keepers anymore because they didn't want him getting hurt.  The fact that he couldn't/wouldn't scramble meant that Moss didn't have as much time to get open, and that's when Culpepper's weaknesses as a pocket passer really became obvious.  He struggled at reading defenses, he struggled at seeing the whole field, and he struggled at making quick decisions.  Plus he was never quite as confident after he got hurt.  When he was able to scramble to extend plays, and either run for 10 yards or throw down field to Moss, he was golden, and he was in his element.  As a pocket passer, not so much.

I liked Garcia during his time in Cleveland except when he tried to do too much... Dilfer had the same problem.   These vets think they had to prove something, and end up shooting the team in the foot by trying things that were beyond their current skill-set.

One of the most important things for a QB to do is to play smart... throw the ball away if nothing is there.  Don't take a sack,...don't throw up an interception... Learn the art of throwing the ball out of bounds (once you're out of the pocket).

Cleveland has not had a 'smart' QB in their whole 2.0 existence.  Sometimes... all you need is a game manager.  You can help the team by not hurting them.

Campbell is a decent QB who makes good decisions. He was solid on the Raiders and the Skins.  The problem is that the Browns don't need a decent QB who can be successful on a good team.  They need someone who can deal with the firing squad that is every defense against their o-line and complete lack of offensive talent.  At this point you bring in a mobile QB that can make plays with his legs and has no care for his own personal health, or you bring in someone with a lightning release and recognition skills.  The problem is that mobile QBs go down faster than you can say Michael Vick, Kurt Warner doesn't want to come out of retirement, and Peyton Manning is currently on a pretty decent team.

Well, Takashi Saito is still playing major professional sports in Japan at 43, 1 year removed from the Dbacks.  Teemu is also 43.

You'd think that at some point these organizations would hire a scouting department rather than relying on what SI publishes the week of the draft.

Moyer was the oldest at 50 until he officially retired this October (though he hadn't played in 2013 at all)

I'm not sure what's wrong with Campbell. He's a game manager type with some starting experience. And that's all they really need, the D is decent enough to win games with a competent QB...aka not Weeden.

He's not great but it's not like they're choosing between him and Peyton Manning. Uh, Jason Campbell, Brandon Weinke er Weeden, or Jeff Garcia? Yeah Campbell seems like the obvious choice.

Pretty much this. Campbell's not going to lose a game, and has the skills to win a few. As a Chargers fan, Campbell was easily the best Raiders QB in the last 10 years.

Come to think of it, that is damning with faint praise...

The Browns' o-line only looks bad because Weeden takes waaay too long to throw the ball. It did just fine when Hoyer was under center. As for a lack of offensive talent, how 'bout Jordan Cameron and Josh Gordon?

Yeah.  At least on paper, the o-line isn't just not bad, but is in fact good.  On paper.  At skill positions, they could do better than McGahee, but he's at least a warm body who can take a few hits (and then likely crumple.)

A competent QB, and their offense could be solidly average.  Add that to a good defense, realize that they're only 3-4, and the sky is the limit!

If the sky is going 9-7, hoping the Bengals fall apart, and then upsetting the Chiefs in the playoffs.

Randy Moss didn't feel like playing. Culpepper needed a spoon fed offense and HoF caliber wide receivers. With the right OC and Moss and Carter, an average quarterback looks like a hall of famer. Some QBs make their receivers look good. Some WRs make their quarterback look good.

Anyway, I'd take Jeff Garcia over the 3 stooges the Vikings have on the QB depth chart.
