I love the idea of Pope Francis calling this Bishop of Bling into his office and dressing him down.

"So hope me God, Tebartz-van Elst, if I ever catch wind of you spending church money like this again I will bust your ass down to deacon so fast your head will spin! Now get out!"

I'm warming to this guy, I must say.  Although, poverty aside, I think there are very good reasons for him to sleep, eat and prepare his own meals outside of the Papal apartments.

I suspect that the "Bishop of bling" has plenty of allies in the church.

Probably not for long. It's generally a bad idea to go up against the Bishop of Rome, and Francis seems to be able to act quickly when he wants to. I'll bet Francis will sell off the residence and find the new Bishop of Limburg a nice modest house in the area. And making the Bishop fly Ryanair to the Vatican is a nice touch.

Good. Now go after the kid farkers and their enablers, Frankie. The Vatican needs a good shake up.

He did it in Argentina, don't see why he'd stop now.

They go $48M over budget on a diocesan renovation, gifted or not, and there are still Jesuits delivering fund-raising pitches all over the Catholic world for anti-hunger and anti-poverty charities?  Let's remember why you're here, folks.

Go Pope, Go!

Tebartz-van Elst is also under investigation for improper use of church money during a recent trip to India, during which the bishop reportedly flew first class.

I'm sorry, I just find this funny. Is he so disconnected from reality that he didn't see what's wrong in taking a first-class flight to talk to the poor people in India?

Yes.  That seems to be the case.

That or there simply wasn't enough mitre-room anywhere but the first class cabin.

Isn't he already better than JP2 and indeed almost all popes, for simply seeming willing to tackle the obvious deficiencies in the Vatican and the greater Catholic world?

So, what's the deadpool at for his assassination.

Don't get me wrong, I like this Pope, I just think he's making powerful enemies.

Having recently flown economy on just a 3 hour trip to Cuba, I personally see nothing wrong with someone choosing 1st class, bad example or not.

F-ing seats are damn torture if you ask me. Dropping $50 large on a new luxury church/home however...

I have to make do with just water running in the bathroom - not champagne? If I wanted this sh*t, I'd be a Lutheran pastor!
Lighten up on the purse-strings, Francis!

He's a Jesuit, one of God's Marines. The first thing they do in seminary is build up a tolerance for iocane powder. Shoot him and he'll snarl and spit holy water at you from the bullet holes.

That bishop is wearing makeup!
That kind of money (55M) spent wisely could help a lot of the poor, orphans, and do some real good in a lot of places.
He needs to live the rest of his life in a monastery without his rank.

$20,000 on a new bathtub
$35,000 on a single conference table

It was kind a of joke honey, but honestly, I think a religious getting the idea that a vow of poverty includes having a multi-million dollar mansion smacks of Prosperity Jesus ideals in practice if not in exactly matching theory.
