Ok let me get this straight.  That affiliate's contract was up for renewal and DirecTV was going to give them double what it was last year but they said no they wanted triple so DirecTV said no.

The affiliate then said to the people that have DirecTV to just get it OTA.  So what's the deal with accepting DirecTVs offer?  If said person could get it for free and you are saying they should get it for free from OTA why are you asking for so much from DirecTV?

These clowns are pissing off Cardinals fans the World Series, and reminding everyone that for 99% of their other programming, they can watch those shows online instead. Brilliant business strategy. I hope their advertisers are paying attention.

Because the people in charge are fking idiots.

Hey broadcast stations: Quit trying to extort money from services that act to EXTEND your viewership (thereby increasing ratings and ad revenue).

I realize the idiotic Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed this, but it was stupid then, and is stupid now.

If you had an ad-free channel, I could understand charging a cable or satellite company money to carry your programming, but at this point, it is merely an additional money grab. I understand greed... but eventually the cable and satellite providers will realize they hold 90% of your current viewers and have a lot more power than they did in 1996. At that point, this silly game is over, and you will simply LOSE.

Try and continue operating with 10% of your viewers left and no revenue from those providers...

Remember when direct TV didn't carry local channels and the dish had a built in antenna to get them? And both worked on the DVR?

Good times.

This is a pretty standard business model these days:  Try to extort more money right before a big event.  I want to say the Fox affiliate in NYC did something similar when the Yankees went to the WS in 2009.  It works for a few reasons:

1) A lot of older HDTVs don't have tuners.  During the analog-digital transition period, the FCC required TV makers to have BOTH tuners in new sets, so they got around this by having no tuner, and selling it as a '55" HD Monitor.'  Because a lot of people have cable/satellite, most don't own a digital tuner either.  Even if you have a tuner, you also need an antenna and a lot of people don't have those.
2) A lot of people (mistakenly) believe that your DirecTV signal has better video quality than your OTA signal.  This is the case if you have bad signal strength locally, but generally your OTA signal is probably better since its not compressed.  Some people also think that digital OTA signals aren't in HD.
3) People are too lazy to set up OTA channels on their TV.

Maybe - signal strength all all that. Also, if you were getting it via satellite, and now have to set up an antenna, you might consider calling, complaining, or just getting cable.

Leaf HD Antenna...~$30.  Problem solved.   Suck it, pay TV  Of course that didn't help when the national league games were on TBS, but it still beats the hell out of $80 a month for cable orsatellite.

MLB's radio package is also $20 for the entire season including playoffs.  Every game, home and away feeds.  I use the living shiat out of it.

I know for myself, I cannot get NBC, CBS or ABC via OTA. There is a hug friggin hill between me and the transmitters, so all I can get OTA is Fox and PBS. Sorry, no sale.

That sucks.  We bought one just to see what would happen after we checked online and were told the reception would be crap due to our location.  Everything is crystal clear for some reason, and we're down in a valley with a hill taller than our house up against our backyard.  To be honest I have no idea how in the hell the thing manages to pick up shiat.

People also don't want to be hassled with having to set up an antenna on the day of the first game of the World Series, but they may have to in order to watch.  This is entirely the affiliate's fault.

Sox in 4.  This is also the ridiculous predictions thread, right?

I live in this city and the real situation is that people with DirecTV are too lazy to buy antennas but not lazy enough to not complain.

Also, this is a rural area and many people who live in the sticks have DirecTV because it is their only option and OTA channels only come in if you have an insane hillbilly antenna.

Nahh, don't burn it down - return it to 1918 specs. That would be AWESOME.

I mean, still build a new park. Just make Fenway 1918 fenway, and maybe even play a Sox/Yankees game there in the throwbacks.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

The satellite and cable companies are charging their customers for these signals.  Broadcasters only want a fair share of those fees.

And then the replacement for the replacement was voted out for Claire McCaskill (D). Because Missouri is (was) a swing state. That particular seat went from Ashcroft to Carnahan to Talent to McCaskill between 2000 and 2006 (McCaskill was reelected in 2012, the first time an incumbent won since John Danforth)

How does a senate election 13 years ago have anything to do with a TV rights dispute again?

my tv takes a 15 minute scan of the channels if i switch from cable to ota. if the antennae doesn't find the weak ota channel i want [that isn't available on cable] i have to move my ota antennae and try again. same goes with just having ota. there isn't any position with my ota antennae i have found that gets all channels. i have to adjust it over and over again and rescan to find the channel to i want at the moment. in other words i can't tell my tv to add ota channel 99.99 and 123.45 even if it says there isn't a signal. the tv has to find it by scanning and me playing with the antennae over and over.

They're not allowed to.  The rule is called Syndex.  Also, the debate here isn't as one-sided as people think.  The local affiliates are important to DirecTV and other carriers, because customers really, really want them.  The affiliates certainly have a right to get paid.

Exactly what amount is best left to the market to work out (as it eventually will).

Q: And who decided to pull the stations from the DirecTV line up?
A: The local stations.  DirecTV has repeatedly demonstrated that they will air a channel while they are negotiating, and only pull it when the station demands it.
