frepnog: pointless, wasteful, useless and stupid.

But how else are rednecks who live near airfields supposed to be entertained for a half hour once a year?

It's not like the military isn't ALWAYS hiring...  Feed the homeless?  Enlist all of them who are sane enough to pass the test.  They'll have jobs and their families will have homes.  If nothing else it will cut down on the sob stories about the poor slobs who were laid off/outsourced/etc and now have to live on the street.  That all by itself would relieve a lot of the pressure on the systems already in place to feed the hobos er... homeless.

Why? because this is awesome.

and because of sequestration, the Navy canceled a lot of the 2013 air shows.

One of the best weekends of the year here, unfortunately I have no faith in this city to have them back. The resident San Franpsyhcopaths will fight tooth and nail to keep them out since we went without last year.

Recruiting.

That's what the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, etc. are:  marketing tools for the recruiters.

$37M?  At $10,000 each, 3,700 houses in the southwest could be outfitted with enough  solar to make them damn near electrically self sufficient.

Can we fly them every other year and split the difference?

They're better-employed recruiting people who will fly the drones we're using to bomb terrorists in Afghanistan.

Erm. With all the these defense cuts and draw downs, why in the hell does the military need a recruiting tool?

Yes, business.  Part of their business is recruiting enough personnel to accomplish goals set for them by the Executive and Legislative branches. Displays of things that evoke positive emotions is part of that effort; looking like you're going to be too broke to do things won't get people lined up for a job.

If you give 20 million to feed the planes, they don't turn into twice as many planes saying
"give us 50 million so we don't rob you".

2013-10-23 03:03:10 PM
Holy shiat.... so the government was forced to spend a little less money, and yet things are getting done?

stpauler: Feed the homeless? fark that. Let's spend $37M a year on flying airplanes.

Fine with me. I'll happily spend my $.10/yr portion of that to keep the Blue Angels flying. Homelessness is a real problem, but simply throwing cash at the problem won't solve it. On the other hand, the Blue Angels are spending it on pilots, gasoline, food, travel, maintenance, and all kinds of other things that support jobs AND create economic activity in a wide range of communities when they go to airshows and draw crowds.

seen em in san fran, seattle, and san diego...though i don't mind as much, if oyu do it;s particularly aggravating because it's not only the show(s) but the rehearsals also.

Depends.   How many recruits do you get out of the 3,700 houses?

2013-10-23 03:09:55 PM

URAPNIS: Erm. With all the these defense cuts and draw downs, why in the hell does the military need a recruiting tool?

Because you still need new recruits to replace the ones that get promoted or leave the military or Air Force.
