Well, in a couple thousand years, that, too, will be cherished as a historical artifact.  No big deal.

And the Party knows it will still be in power then, anyway.

Images are buried in an applet of some kind.  Beyond my skillz, sorry.

old: antique fresco about 50% flaked away
new: technicolor vaguely old-timey looking thing that has nothing to do with the old

It isn't about whether or not the frescoes are aesthetically pleasing to you, it is about preserving a piece of cultural history.  Lack of understanding of that fact is precisely why this happened.

Does anybody else find it interesting that the deities pictured in the older frescoes are all now decidedly more human looking (if that is intended to be the same scene at all)?  It is a much more secular-humanist piece now, and rife with the colors of The Party.

I have to wonder if they had a hand in this and the sackings are a way to save face.

so what... now it matches all the other "priceless and ancient sites" that mao destroyed that are reproductions.  the forbidden palace seems a lot less impressive when you find out it its mostly only 30 years old... less impressive still when you see the "sponsored by visa" logos... and even more so when you see that they just stuck duct tape over the logos when the sponsorship ran out.
