How can you honestly believe that? It means that if you went out into the streets of Maine and asked people "do you have a job" roughly every other person would say "no." I can't imagine believing that is true of your own state.

While the headline is true, the preferred GOP method of divination is using chicken bones after the bird has been farked.

As I understand by comments on other sites, the number also includes 16-18 year-olds with no job.  All those damn slackers with their schools and their geometry and their chemistry, not contributing to father corporation...

the Bangor Daily News points out that 65 percent of able-bodied Mainers are working or actively seeking work. The 35 percent remaining is composed largely of retirees, homemakers, students, and the disabled.

I have nothing really to add on substance, but are they counting the disabled among the able-bodied?  That seems oxymoronic.  It would also mean that the percentage of employed is even higher than 65%.

It's numerical psychology. If 47% are takers, then makers still have a small, imperiled majority that must be defended at all costs. It's just another way to scare & divide people.

How many of that 47% without jobs are children? How many are active duty military members? How many are prisoners? How many are disabled and unable to work in any productive capacity? How many are in school full-time? How many are mothers whose job is taking care of the house and the kids? How many have worked for thirty-some years already and are enjoying their golden years?

I assume when they specifically say "disabled," they mean paraplegic, mentally disabled, etc. Disabilities that actually render you incapable of working. Whereas people that are deaf or only missing a limb would still count as able-bodied.

But that sentence is still stupidly worded.

I agree it is impossible to tell. We had this debate last year when Mitt Romney was praising his wife for staying at home and said she was working a full-time job but then slammed single moms for lazily mooching on the government teat to take care of their kids. The best heuristic I can come up with is it is only okay for a woman to be a parasite as long as they are sucking on their rich husband.

If 35% are retired, etc. and 12% of the population is unemployed and looking for work, he could technically be correct.  It was clearly a dumb statement, but it MIGHT be correct.

How come children and retired people are such free loaders?  I really long for the good old days of child labor and impossibility of retirement for most of society.  Oh and can we get rid of weekends too?  Those really cramp my style.  Just lock me in a warehouse, preferably with dangerous fumes, hazardous chemicals, and extremely dangerous equipment.  Then, when one of my limbs inevitably gets mangled, throw me in debtor's prison where I'll slowly die of disease, malnourishment, exposure, or similar.  I just can't wait to get started.

LePage is a dumbass for letting the game slip.

See, the Republicans need to be the party that will eliminate the "lazies" to succeed.  So, they carefully word their scripts so that people living paycheck-to-paycheck can demonize the "lazies" right along with the rich yuppies at the top.  Of course, when the rich yuppies at the top refer to "lazies", they refer to anyone not making at least six figures...including everyone that lives paycheck-to-paycheck.  And they preach it like gospel...in fact, they've gotten churches to preach it that way; thus, the Prosperity Gospel. If you're not making bank, there's something wrong with you, and those who aren't making bank are lazies who don't deserve anything.  But remember, Joe Sixpack: the guys at the top aren't referring to the welfare queens when they talk about the "lazies": They're talking about you.  And LePage just admitted it.

Pshaw, who cares if the number is TRUE?  It a NUMBER, and a STATISTIC, and it supports his worldview, its turth or falsity is irrelevant, it supports The Truth, the governonrs devoutly held conservative beliefs, so it is "True" even if it isn;t strictly speaking, true.  Just like his statement that a tax cut for millionaires was needed because the number of millionaires in the state had declined by 80% over the last 20 years as wealthy people fled Maine's oppresive tax structure.  To him that was TRUE because it is an article of faith that the tax system unfairly punishes the top earners for thier sucess and industry.   The fact that a glance at a census chart would have shown him that the number of millionaires in Maine actually INCREASED 85% over that time period, is utterly beside the point.

Climate change is a hoax
Obama is secretly trying to take everyone's guns away

In general its true, half of all people are children, elderly, or disabled. If you had asked this question a few generations ago you'd find that another half work as housewives, so you'd be down to a good 25% of the population working.
