It is interesting to walk through some of the grave yards and see the progression of head stones.  We have ones from colonial times with puritan iconography, we have large, elaborate family plots for rich factory owners we even have graves set aside for those who died of small pox.  Grave markings are long lasting insight to the culture of the time.  Instead of conforming to some HOA like standard we should let people grieve, it helps them and it will tell future generations who we were.

A lot of modern cemeteries limit you to a bronze tablet which lies flat against the ground.

Why?  Because it makes the cemetery easier and cheaper to mow using industrial mowers (older cemeteries have to send someone around with a weed wacker to clean up around the stones).
