My high school counselor said if I became a firefighter I would be beating off the pussy with a stick.  I don't think that's what he had in mind,

The cat got up there by itself. It will come down by itself.

Has anyone ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?!?!?

Lord look at the size of that truck.  Wonder what they are compensating for?  Anyway, if the cat was only 25' up couldn't they have stood on the roof of that beast and gotten it?

It's legit, any time you get a chance to haul out the equipment in a real-world scenario then all the guys get further training and familiarity in the safe use and deployment. Especially something that big and complicated. And since this scenario wouldn't be an emergency, you can stop and explain or demonstrate if one of the newer guys isn't sure.

The ladder is often the least used piece of equipment too (at least around here), so they might look for reasons to get it moving.

Bottom line though, these guys are cowboys and heroes, that's why they got into this business. So when the Captain gets a chance to get all heroic and in the local paper saving a kitten he's going to be all over that. Plus, he probably almost never gets to go up the ladder anymore, in a real emergency he'd be coordinating on the ground, not playing fireman.

And you know that photo of him with the kitten will be blown up big and on display at his retirement party.

I ask any of you:  Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?  They eventually figure it out.

Plus hell, the main expense is buying the thing in the first place.  Driving it across town and putting the basket up is just man-hours, not real wear and tear.

// cats usually come down on their own
// ever see a cat skeleton in a tree?

That's because the world is full of good, kind people who will climb a tree and rescue the poor kitty before it turns to bones and dust.

no, they don't still rescue cats. My cat got out this summer and tore up the tree in the yard. Got about 4 stories high. I was up on a ladder about 25 feet up trying to coax him down while my wife called the fire dept about a rescue. They literally laughed at her when she asked for help. Meanwhile, the stupid cat decides that the way out is up and keeps going higher until we can't even see him any more. Then I hear a "crack, meow, crack, meow, crack, meow..." as he lost his balance and fell, hitting every single branch on the way down to the ground. Fortunately hitting 20+ branches slowed him down so he's still around, but the fire station is literally a block away and sending a ladder truck over would've been nice and saved me the mini-heart attack i had listening to him fall.
