When a real human can' t drink Duff Beer the Simpsons have already won!
2001-12-04 03:29:52 PM
Why would ANYONE have a problem with this lawsuit? Fox had the copyright. As a commercial enterprise in the business of making money, FOX doesn't like the idea of other people giving away or selling any product that only they have the liscence to, and may one day want to sell. If FOX didn't want to make money, there would be no Simpsons!

...and the terrorists will have already won!

I'm sure its just the generations of South Island in-breeding that make him say the Simpsons is rubbish...

and i really coulda donw without all the "No laughing matter" 'gags' at the start of that article...

the episode where homer visits the duff brewery with barney was called "Duffless" and he gets caught drink driving and tries to quit drinking for one month.

Brilliant episode. not"rubbish"

when i was seventeen i drank some very good beer
i drank some very good beer i purchased with a fake i.d.
my name was brian mcgee i stayed up listening to queen
when i was 17

MMMMMMMMMMM...Gummi Beers!

I agree with Fry1138. Duffless is a good episode. It's from one of the earlier seasons. Number 2 possibly.
2001-12-04 04:22:23 PM
The point is: Fox coined that beer name and copyrighted it; now these clowns are trying to make money off it.

Don't you think that if some shrimp company changed its name to "Bubba Gump," they might just be flirting with a little litigation?
2001-12-04 04:28:48 PM
There is a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company (not a bad place to eat on the wharf in San Francisco) They have a fake Forrest who sits on a bench outside for the tourists to have their picture taken with) Point is I'm sure they paid for the right to use the name. Duff should do the same.

Matt Groening got slammed for sueing college kids who were making bootleg Bart t-shirts. I guess he can hide behind Fox now. Anyway, it's CARTOON BEER for gawd's sake! I mean, i am a faithful Simpson's fan, but geeeeeez.
2001-12-04 04:40:49 PM
Don't forget that the brewer's surname is Duff. So it's not as if they went "Let's change the name to something well known so we'll get more sales - Budweiser should do it!".

This is probably the reason why Fox are being sensible about it (helping pay for rebranding).

Same thing with Neil & Tim Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House). They released an album under the name 'Finn'. When they got to the US, they changed to 'Finn Brothers' on account of a band already called Finn. They changed 'cos they didn't want to go through the legal hassles that would ensue.

My favorite Simpson's episode: the Halloween special where Dole and Clinton were jettisoned from the alien spaceship. kick-ass.
2001-12-04 04:53:09 PM
This reminds me of a case in Toronto where a guy named Mitas owned a brake shop, and the good folks ad Midas wanted him to change his lineage.

Anyway, he should take this oppourtunity to name his beer 'Fark'.

2001-12-04 05:01:51 PM
I was on the side of the brewers until I read the last line of the article. Now I say that Fox should ask for the death penalty.

Enough of this Duff stuff...

Bring on the "blast that lasts"

Olde-English 800!

When I first saw the name of the team, I thought you'd posted a report on a KKK group.

Duff will be paying FOX in beer.

I'm dreaming of a foamy ice-cold white christmas....

You thought my post had too many words in it! Don't mince words! Your opinion counts!

Up next, Fox brings lawsuits against everyone named "Simpson."

Film at 11:00.

Duff Man can't breathe, Oh no!
2001-12-04 07:14:03 PM
Wow, I guess no one drinks Fudd around here...
2001-12-04 07:24:41 PM
Heh. Been done. There was an Aussie brewery that did exactly the same thing (albeit without the surname=duff protection thingy). Got (ahem) canned for it. The six packs are somewhat collectible now, although the beer was pretty damn awful.

You want the truth, you want the truth? You can't handle the truth. Cuz when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo, that was your best friend's face. You'll know what to do. Forget it Marge, it's Chinatown.
2001-12-04 09:21:44 PM
They should change the name to "Duff" (with an umlaut of the u).

2001-12-04 09:22:52 PM
ack!! with an umlaut over the u

sorry. i had a few Duff's myself.

The thing about this is, it already happened once before in Australia. The South Australia Brewing Company brought out Duff Beer in the late 90s and got sued by Fox and had to discontinue producing it. I bought couple cases of it in '98 while I was there, drank one can.. wasn't very good, still have the rest, it's worth a decent amount of money now.. seems kind of stupid that a company did the same thing so close, you'd think they'd have heard of the case from the previous incident.
2001-12-04 10:33:00 PM
Pudifoot, in an episode Homer asks Moe for something foreign, and he pulls out a can of Duff and a marker and puts two dots over the U(thus an umlaut), so it's been done, and they'd still probably sue over it.

And I just noticed Kermitalex said about the same thing as I did in my last post, oops. Oh well, mine had a bit more info.

Fark Fox!
2001-12-05 12:00:09 AM
Kinda reminds me of a case 10 years ago where this family by the name of Simpson was trying to sue Matt Groening or Fox or whomever for using their name. The father apparently worked in a nuclear plant as well, and the family was whining that they were getting teased. *rolls eyes*

In that case, I ought to sue Britney 'cause MY last name is Spears as well. Fortunately it's my MARRIED name. (close sarcasm tag)

Some people need to get a life.

Looks like Rex Banner's gonna have to show up and kick some ass.
2001-12-05 01:18:23 AM
uh didnt they already ban it
i got a can that i bought in 1996 its meant to be $75 a can now betta get my ass on Ebay and see what its at now :-))
2001-12-05 07:15:50 AM
I worked at a nightclub in Sydney and got three cases of the stuff as a freebie. Gave one away and drank the rest. There's a few grand down the pan... (annoyed grunt)
